Յոդն օրգանիզմի համար ամենակարևոր միկրոտարրերից մեկն է, քանի որ պատասխանատու է դրա բալանսավորված աշխատանքի համար, սակայն շատերի սննդակարգում դրա մակարդակը չափազանց ցածր է լինում, ինչի մասին են փաստում նաև Վահանագեղձի գերմանական կենտրոնի տվյալները։ 

Յոդը հարկավոր է օրգանիզմին վահանագեղձի հորմոնների (օրինակ՝ թիրոքսինի և եռյոդթիրոնինի) արտադրության համար, իսկ այս գեղձն ամենակարևոր օրգաններից մեկն է, որը մասնակցում է օրգանիզմում ընթացող ամենատարբեր գործընթացներին։ Բավարար քանակությամբ յոդ չստանալու դեպքում մարդու մոտ կարող է ձևավորվել յոդի դեֆիցիտ, որն էլ ի վերջո կարող է հանգեցնել ամենատարբեր խանգարումների զարգացման։ Նման խնդիրներից խուսափելու համար հարկավոր է ժամանակին ախտորոշել յոդի պակասն ու լրացնել այն, ուստի խնդրի մասին հուշող ախտանշաններն իմանալը շատ կարևոր է։

Օրգանիզմում յոդի պակասի մասին կարող են հուշել այնպիսի ախտանշանները, ինչպիսին է վահանագեղձի մեծացումը (խպիպ), որը հաճախ զարգանում է առանց ախտանշանների ու պատահմամբ է հայտնաբերվում։ Բացի այդ, այս խնդրի մասին կարող են հուշել նաև հիպոթիրեոզը (վահանագեղձի թերֆունկցիա), ուշադրության կենտրոնացման հետ կապված խնդիրները, սաստիկ հոգնածությունը, կոկորդի սեղմվածության զգացողությունը, ինչն ազդում է կլման գործընթացի վրա, ցրտի նկատմամբ զգայունությունը, մաշկային խնդիրները (գունատություն, այտուցներ, չորություն կամ նորմայից ցածր ջերմաստիճան), ինչպես նաև երեխաների ու դեռահասների մոտ աճի խնդիրներն ու զարգացման խանգարումները։ 

Յոդի դեֆիցիտն առավել տարածված է կանանց ու դեռահասների շրջանում։ Ընդ որում՝ կանանց մոտ այս խնդրի զարգացման հավանականությունը բարձրանում է հղիության ու երեխային կրծքով կերակրելու ընթացքում։ Բացի այս, յոդի դեֆիցիտը բավական տարածված է նաև բուսակերների ու վեգանների շրջանում։

Յոդով հարուստ սննդամթերքի տեսակների շարքում առավել հայտնի են ծովային ջրիմուռները, ուստի այս տարրի դեֆիցիտի դեպքում մարդիկ հաճախ սննդակարգում մեծ քանակությամբ ջրիմուռներ են օգտագործում, ինչը, սակայն, կարող է խիստ վտանգավոր լինել։ Բանն այն է, որ երբեմն դրանցում յոդի պարունակությունը չափազանց բարձր է լինում, ուստի ջրիմուռների գործածությունը կարող է հանգեցնել յոդի գերդոզավորման, ինչը կարող է կյանքի համար վտանգավոր լինել։

Վերոնշյալ խանգարումները նկատելու դեպքում հարկավոր է անպայման խորհրդակցել բժշկի հետ ու բուժզննում անցնել, որից հետո անհրաժեշտության դեպքում մասնագետը կնշանակի անհրաժեշտ բուժումը։ Որպես կանոն այս խնդրի դեպքում նշանակվում են յոդի հավելումներ, սակայն անհրաժեշտ չափաբաժինը կարող է որոշել միայն մասնագետը, ուստի ոչ մի դեպքում չի կարելի ինքնուրույն սկսել նման հավելումներ ընդունել։
