2014-ին, երբ Ղրիմ թերակղզին ներառվել է ՌԴ կազմում, Գերմանիայի կանցլեր Անգելա Մերկելը մշտական կապի մեջ է եղել ՌԴ նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ: Այդ ժամանակ կանցլերը չէր կարող պատկերացնել, որ Մոսկվան որոշելու է միջամտել Կիևի` Դոնեցկի և Լուգանսկի ինքնահռչակ հանրապետությունների միջև դիմակայությանը:

Ճգնաժամի պայմաններում Գերմանիայի ղեկավարը տասնյակ զանգեր է կատարել, գրում է ytro.news-ը: 

Մերկելը հրաժարվել է անձնական հանդիպումից, քանի որ հասկանում էր, որ գործնականում հաջողության հասնելու հնարավորություն չունի: Կանցլերը վախենում էր նաև Ռուսաստանի նախագահի կողմից նվաստացումից: Ուստի բոլոր քննարկումներն անցկացվել են հեռախոսով: 

Ինչպես վստահեցնում է պատմաբան Ռալֆ Բոլմանը, դա ավելի շատ լավ էր, քան վատ, քանի որ այս կերպ երկու երկրների ղեկավարները կարող էին միմյանց հայտնել այն, ինչ նրանք մտածում էին: Տեսողական անմիջական շփման բացակայությունը շատ ավելի հեշտացրել է այս խնդիրը:

«Այս երկուսը բաց էին խոսում միմյանց հետ ... այլ կերպ ասած` երբեմն նույնիսկ գոռում էին»,- ասվում է Մերկելի կենսագրության մեջ: 

Բանավոր «մենամարտերի» ժամանակ Պուտինը շատ էր խոսում: Երբեմն նա նույնիսկ թույլ էր տալիս իրեն բարկանալ, չափից դուրս հուզական լինել: Մյուս կողմից՝ Մերկելը խոսում էր ավելի կարճ արտահայտություններով՝ փորձելով ավելի սառը լինել և իրավիճակը վերահսկողության տակ պահել:
