Դժվար է այսօր պատկերացնել, որ առաջին մարտկոցների արտադրությունը սկսվել է ընդամենը մեկ դար առաջ: Մարտկոցների շուկայի ամենահին ընկերություններից մեկը եղել է Energizer ընկերությունը, որի պատմությունն սկսվել է 1886 թվականին: Հենց այդ ժամանակ էլ տեղի է ունեցել NCC-ի (Ազգային ածխային ընկերություն) ստեղծումը, որը հետագայում ստացել է Energizer անվանումը: Այնուամենայնիվ, զանգվածային արտադրված առաջին մարտկոցները, որոնք ակտիվորեն օգտագործվել են տնային պայմաններում, ստեղծվել է ընկերության ստեղծվելուց միայն տասը տարի անց:

Որոշվել է դրանք անվանել Energizer. այս ապրանքանիշի ներքո հետագայում ևս արտադրվել են մարտկոցներով լապտերներ: Ինը վոլտ հզորությամբ առաջին մարտկոցները վաճառքի են հանվել 1956 թվականին: Ռադիոընդունիչների մարտկոցները հայտնվել են վաճառքում 1958 թվականին, միևնույն ժամանակ սկսել են արտադրվել վերալիցքավորվող առաջին մարտկոցները: Մեկ տարի անց ընկերությունը սկսել է ստանդարտ ալկալիական մարտկոցների արտադրությունը: Առաջին մանրակերտ հաբ-մարտկոցները, որոնք օգտագործվել են ձեռքի ժամացույցներում և լսողական սարքերում, ներկայացվել են 1960 թվականին: Լիթիում-իոնային մարտկոցների ժամանակը եկել է 1963 թվականին: Հետագայում RalstonPurina ընկերությունը, որը մասնագիտացված է եղել անասունների համակցված կերերի արտադրության մեջ, Union Carbide ընկերությունից գնել է Energizer մարտկոցներ արտադրելու իրավունքը:

Հենց նույն ժամանակ էլ սկսել է ակտիվություն ցուցաբերել Duracell մրցակցային ընկերությունը, որը ևս մարտկոցներ է արտադրել: Նրա վարած գովազդային արշավում խոսվել է իրենց ալկալային մարտկոցների ավելի երկար կյանքի մասին (շատ ավելի երկար, քան Energizer- ի մարտկոցները), որը զգալի հաջողություններ է ապահովել այդ ընկերության համար: Ներկայումս մարտկոցներ արտադրող նշյալ ընկերությունները շարունակում են զարգանալ, չնայած աճի տեմպերը հիմա այնքան արագ չեն, որքան նախկինում էին:
