Իշխանության գալուց հետո ամերիկացի առաջնորդը զանգահարել է Վլադիմիր Պուտինին և խոստացել «պաշտպանել ԱՄՆ-ի ազգային շահերը` ի պատասխան Ռուսաստանի վնասակար գործողությունների»: Ավելի ուշ նա ցանկանում էր ստիպել իր ռուս գործընկերոջը «վճարել» հինգ տարի առաջ ընտրություններին միջամտելու համար:
