Աղբի կղզին գտնվում է Խաղաղ օվկիանոսի հյուսիսային մասում: Դրա գտնվելու վայրը պայմանավորում են օվկիանոսային հոսանքները, որոնք առաջացնում են դրա շուրջը հսկայական ջրապտույտ, որը բերում է նորանոր թափոններ ու աղբը պահում համարյա նույն վայրում:
Երկար ժամանակ կղզու տեղն աննկատ էր, քանի որ այն ընկած է նավերի երթուղուց հեռու: Այն հայտնաբերեց Չառլզ Մուրը, ով տեսածից հայտնվեց շոկի մեջ:
