Վիկինգները Հյուսիսային Ամերիկա էին հասել Կոլումբոսից 1000 տարի առաջ, հաղորդում է CBS-ն՝ հղում անելով նոր հետազոտությանը:
Հետազոտողներին հաջողվել է պարզել վիկինգների ներկայության ժամանակագրությունը՝ վերլուծելով երեք փայտակտոր երեք տարբեր ծառերից, որոնք հատել էին վիկինգները L'Anse aux Meadows-ում՝ Կանադայի Նյուֆաունդլենդում գտնվող պատմական վայրում: Parks Canada-ի տվյալներով՝ այդ վայրը երկար ժամանակ համարվել է Ամերիկայում եվրոպացիների ներկայության առաջին հայտնի վկայությունը, սակայն վիկինգների՝ այդտեղ հայտնվելու հստակ տարեթիվը հայտնի չէր:
Հետազոտողներն օգտագործել են փայտանյութի հասակը պարզելու համար ռադիոածխածնային եղանակը: Մեթոդը թույլ է տալիս մոտավոր գնահատել, սակայն այն, ինչն իսկապես կրճատել է հարցերի շրջանակը հետազոտողների շրջանում, զանգվածային արեւային փոթորիկն էր, որը տեղի է ունեցել 992 թվականին: Արեւից ճառագայթվող էներգիայի հսկայական արտանետումը հավելյալ ածխածին է ավելացնում մթնոլորտում՝ այդկերպ մեծացնելով այդ ժամանակաշրջանում կենդանի օրգանիզմներում ածխածնի քանակը:
Վիկինգների հատած ծառերի վրա դեռեւս տեսանելի են տարիների մասին վկայող օղակները: Դրանցից մեկը համընկել է արեւային փոթորկի հետ եւ ունեցել 29 օղակ, որոնք ձեւավորվել են դրանից հետո, իսկ դա նշանակում է, որ փայտանյութը հատվել է արեւային փոթորկից 29 տարի անց՝ 1021 թվականին:
Հետազոտողների խոսքով՝ բոլոր փայտյա մասերը հատվել են մետաղյա գործիքներով: Այդ տարածքում արմատական ժողովուրդների համայնքներում այդ ժամանակ այդպիսի գործիքներ չեն եղել:
L'Anse aux Meadows-ը ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի Համաշխարհային ժառանգության օբյեկտ է, որում, կազմակերպության խոսքով, կան «բացառիկ հնագիտական» օբյեկտներ, որոնք, ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի խոսքով, կառուցված են նույն ոճով, ինչպես սկանդինավյան Գրենլանդիայում ու Իսլանդիայում նույն ժամանակաշրջանում: Մյուս արտեֆակտները, որոնք հայտնաբերվել են այդ վայրում, մատնանշում են, որ վիկինգները ստեղծել են երկաթյա ու փայտե պարագաներ:
