Ճապոնիան օգոստոսի 6-ին նշում է Հիրոսիմայի ատոմային ռմբակոծության 77-րդ տարելիցը

1945 թվականի օգոստոսի 6-ին՝ տեղական ժամանակով առավոտյան ժամը 08:15-ին, ԱՄՆ B-29 «Էնոլա Գեյ» ռազմական ինքնաթիռը «Փոքրիկ տղա» մականունով ատոմային ռումբը նետել է Հիրոսիմա քաղաքի վրա՝ ավերելով այն և սպանելով 350 000 բնակիչ ունեցող քաղացում ապրող մոտ 140 000 մարդու: Հազարավոր մարդիկ ավելի ուշ մահացել են վնասվածքներից և ճառագայթահարման հետ կապված հիվանդություններից:
Հիրոսիմայի հարձակումից երեք օր անց՝ 1945 թվականի օգոստոսի 9-ին, Միացյալ Նահանգները հերթական ատոմային ռումբն է նետել Նագասակիի վրա, որն ակնթարթորեն սպանել է ավելի քան 75 000 մարդու:
Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմում Նացիստական Գերմանիայի դաշնակից Ճապոնիան հանձնվել է ատոմային հարձակումներից վեց օր անց՝ օգոստոսի 15-ին:
Նախորդ տարիներին Ճապոնիայի վարչապետներն ու քաղաքների ղեկավարները մասնակցել են ամենամյա հիշատակի արարողություններին և վերահաստատել իրենց խոստումները՝ ջանք գործադրելու միջուկային զենքից զերծ աշխարհի կայացման համար: Ավանդաբար, երկու քաղաքներում ռումբերի գործարկման պահին հնչում են զանգեր, և հայտարարվում է մեկ րոպե լռություն:
