Օգոստոսի 27-ին, ժամը 05.10-ին, «Չարենցավան» բժշկական կենտրոնից ոստիկանություն հաղորդում էր ստացվել, որ բուժօգնության են տեղափոխվել Կոտայքի մարզի Արզական գյուղի երկու բնակիչ՝ «պարանոցի և որովայնի բազմակի ծակած-կտրած վերքեր, հեմոռագիկ շոկ» ախտորոշմամբ 57-ամյա տղամարդ և նախաբազկի ծակած-կտրած վնասվածքով 52-ամյա կին: Հիվանդանոց տեղափոխվածներն ամուսիններ էին:

52-ամյա կինը Չարենցավանի բաժնի ոստիկաններին հաղորդում էր տվել, որ օգոստոսի 27-ին, ժամը 03.30-ի սահմաններում, 46-ամյա համագյուղացին մտել էր իրենց ննջասենյակ և իրեն ծեծի ենթարկել ու դանակով խփել իր արմունկին, այնուհետև նույն դանակով մի քանի հարված էր հասցրել ամուսնուն՝ պատճառելով մարմնական վնասվածքներ:

Արզական գյուղի 46-ամյա բնակչին հայտնաբերելու նպատակով ոստիկանները գնացել էին նրա բնակության հասցե, որտեղ ննջասենյակում հայտնաբերել էին նրա 35-ամյա կնոջ դիակը՝ պարանոցը մասամբ կտրած վիճակում:

Սկսվեցին ծավալուն օպերատիվ-քննչական միջոցառումներ՝ Արզական գյուղի բնակիչ Զորիկ Մելքոնյանին հայտնաբերելու ուղղությամբ:

Օգոստոսի 30-ին, ժամը 08.50-ի սահմաններում, ոստիկանության օպերատիվ կառավարման կենտրոնից Կոտայքի բաժին հաղորդում ստացվեց. ոստիկանություն զանգած քաղաքացին հայտնել էր, որ Բալահովիտ գյուղում մարդ են սպանել և դիմել փախուստի:

Ժամը 09.08-ին ոստիկանության օպերատիվ կառավարման կենտրոնից Կոտայքի բաժին հաջորդ հաղորդումը ստացվեց. ոստիկանություն էր զանգել բաց բաժնետիրական ընկերություններից մեկի տնօրենը և հայտնել, որ ընկերության՝ Բալահովիտ գյուղի 8-րդ փողոցի արտադրական տարածքում աշխատակցին դանակահարել են և, ըստ ականատեսների, դանակահարողը Արզական գյուղում կնոջը սպանած Զորիկ Մելքոնյանն է, որը նախկինում այդ հիմնարկում էր աշխատել:

Այնուհետև «Աբովյան» բժշկական կենտրոնից էր հաղորդում ստացվել. հիվանդանոց էին տեղափոխվել 34-ամյա տղամարդու դիակ և կտրած-ծակած վնասվածքներով 29-ամյա երիտասարդ:

Ժամեր անց՝ արդեն օգոստոսի 31-ի ժամը 00.40-ին, ոստիկանություն ահազանգ էր ստացվել Աբովյան քաղաքի Երևանյան փողոցի բենզալցակայանի աշխատակցից: Նա հայտնել էր, որ օգոստոսի 30-ի լույս գիշերը, ժամը 04.00-ից 04.30-ի սահմաններում, Արզական գյուղի բնակիչ Զորիկ Մելքոնյանը դանակի սպառնալիքով սննդամթերք և ծխախոտ էր պահանջել, որոնք ստանալով՝ հեռացել էր: Ժամը 07.00-ից ժամը 07.30-ն ընկած ժամանակահատվածում նա կրկին գնացել էր նույն բենզալցակայան ու այս անգամ պահանջել փող, անվադող, բջջային հեռախոսի քարտ և գումար, ապա հեռացել էր:

Քրեական ոստիկանության գլխավոր վարչության, Կոտայքի մարզային վարչության, Չարենցավանի, Կոտայքի, Հրազդանի և Նաիրիի բաժինների ծառայողների համատեղ օպերատիվ-հետախուզական միջոցառումների և բացատրական աշխատանքի արդյունքում սեպտեմբերի 3-ին, ժամը 03.15-ին, Արզական գյուղի 46-ամյա բնակիչ Զորիկ Մելքոնյանը ներկայացել է ոստիկանության Չարենցավանի բաժին և ձերբակալվել: Նա հայտնել է, որ կնոջը՝ Սեդա Պ.-ին և 34-ամյա Սոս Գ.ին սպանել է ինքը, ինչպես նաև դանակահարել ու մարմնական վնասվածքներ է պատճառել երեք անձի:
