Սուրեն Հասմիկյանը դերասանուհի Հասմիկի թոռն էր։

Կյանքից հեռացել է կինոգետ, թատերագետ, ՀՀ արվեստի վաստակավոր գործիչ Սուրեն Հասմիկյանը։

Թատերագետ Նարինե Սարգսյանը գրում է. «Մեծ մտավորական, գաղափարների շտեմարան, տաղանդավոր տոհմի արտիստիկ զավակ, դեպի դուրս ուղղված փիլիսոփայական հայացքով, դեպի ներս՝ ինքնահեգնանքով, մեղմ ու պոռթկուն, պարզ ու խորը, մեծ մտքով, մեծ սրտով ու շուրջը բարության, շիտակության ցոլքեր սփռող Մեծատառով Մարդ՝ Սուրեն Հասմիկյան։ Ո՛նց ենք աղքատանում Ձեր բացառիկ մարդ տեսակի կորստով։

Սուրեն Հասմիկյանը դերասանուհի Հասմիկի թոռն էր։

Ծնվել է 1935 թվականին, Երևանում։ Դեռ մանկուց որոշել էր, որ եթե զբաղվի արվեստի որևէ ճյուղով, ի պատիվ տատիկի, անպայման կընտրի «Հասմիկյան» կեղծանունը, որը հետագայում դարձավ նրա «պաշտոնական» ազգանունը։

1957 թվականին ավարտել է Երևանի պետական համալսարանի բանասիրական ֆակուլտետի ռուս գրականության բաժինը։ 1961 թվականին Մոսկվայում ավարտել է ասպիրանտուրան՝ կինոգիտության գծով։ Եղել է առաջին կինոգետներից, որ գիտական ուսումնասիրության առարկա է դարձրել հայ կինոն։ 1960-ականներին աշխատել է «Հայֆիլմ» կինոստուդիայում՝ որպես խմբագիր։ 1971-1982 թվականներին եղել է Հայաստանի Պետկինոյի գլխավոր խմբագիրը։ 1989 թվականից Հայաստանի կինեմատոգրաֆիստների միության կինոքննադատների կոլեգիայի նախագահ։ 1968-1978 թվականներին հեռուստատեսությունում վարել է հայ կինոյին նվիրված հաղորդաշար։ 1991 թվականին նկարահանվել է Վիգեն Չալդրանյանի «Ձայն բարբառոյ...» ֆիլմում։

1957 թվականից հեղինակել է շուրջ 1000 կինոքննադատական հոդված, բազմաթիվ սցենարներ, 3 գիրք։ Նրա աշխատություններից առավել հայտնի են «Սեղմ կադր» և «Փրկության կղզի» գրքերը։ 1972 թվականից դասավանդում է Երևանի Խաչատուր Աբովյանի անվան պետական մանկավարժական համալսարանի մշակույթի ֆակուլտետում, 1983 թվականից՝ Երևանի թատրոնի և կինոյի պետական ինստիտուտում, որտեղ 1994-2006 թվականներին եղել է արվեստի տեսության և պատմության ամբիոնի վարիչը։
