Մեծ Մետաքսի ճանապարհի մի մասնիկը՝ միջնադարյան քարավանատուն

Ժամանակակից Հայաստանի տարածքում մոտավորապես երկու տասնյակ հուշարձաններ են պահպանվել, որոնք վերաբերում են Մեծ Մետաքսե ճանապարհին
Հուշարձանների մեծ մասն ավիրված է: Առավել հայտնի ու լավ պահպանված հուշարձաններից է 14-րդ դարում կառուցված քարվանատունը, որը գտնվում է Վարդենյաց (Սելիմի) լեռնանցքում՝ 2410 մետր բարձրության վրա:
Ժամանակին լեռնանցքը միացնում էր Մեծ Հայքի Սյունիքի մարզի Գեղարքունիքի գավառը Վայոց ձորի հետ, ավելի ճիշտ՝ միջնադարում ճանապարհը միացնում էր Դվին ու Պարտավ քաղաքները:
Ներկայիս ավտոմայրուղին գրեթե կրկնում է հին Մետաքսի ճանապարհը: Ճանապարհի աջ կողմում կարելի է տեսնել միջնադարյան կամուրջի ավիրակները:
Կառույցի հիմնական մասը կառուցվել է 1332 թ. խան Բուսաիդի օրոք՝ Չեսար Օրբելյան իշխանի հրամանով: Հիմնական դահլիճը բազալտից է կառուցվախ: Շենքը միաժամանակ կենդանիների մսուր էր ու ճամփորդների ու վաճառականների իջեւանատուն: Քարվանատան գլխավոր մուտքը զարդարված է թեւավոր էակի ու ցուլի՝ Օրբելյանների իշխանական տան գերբի խոհրդանիշների բարձրաքանդակներով:
Քարավանատան գլխավոր սրահի լուսավորությունն ու օդափոխանակությունը ապահովվում էր կտուրի անցքերով՝ երդիկներով: Կառույցի երկարությունը կազմում է 41 մետր: Ներսի շինությունը՝ 26 х13 մ չափերով է, այն յոթ զույգ սյուներով բաժանված է երեք նավերի ու ծածկված է երկթեք կտուրով: Դահլիճի կենտրոնում լայն ջրհորդան է: Մասնագետների կարծիքով դա անասունների ջրելատեղն էր: Նախասրահի պատերի որմնախորշերը զարդարված են նախշերով ու քանդակներով:
Քարավանատունը քանդվել էր 15-16 դդ-ում: Վերոնորոգվել 1956-59թթ: Ամբողջովին վերանորոգված է հենածածկը, վերականգնված են հարավային պատը ու քանդված ներքին պատերը, կամարները:
Շենքում էլեկտրականություն անցկացված չէ, դրա համար էլ այն ուսումնասիրելու համար ճամփորդներին լապտեր է պետք: Դահլիճի պատերը սեւ են ու բորբոսնած: Նույնիսկ ամառային արեւոտ օրերին քարվանատանը սառն է՝ ըստ երեւույթին պատերի հաստության ո ւ պատուհանների բացակայության պատճառով:
