«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Ըմբշամարտի ի հայտ գալը՝ որպես մարտական և կիրառական արվեստի տարր, գալիս է հին ժամանակներից։ Ըմբշամարտը հնագույն օլիմպիական խաղերի ծրագրում եղել է ամենահայտնի մարզաձևերից մեկը։ Բայց դա եղել է դասական կամ, ինչպես հետագայում է անվանվել, հունահռոմեական ըմբշամարտը: Ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտը ի հայտ է եկել շատ ավելի ուշ, և նրա հիմնական տարբերությունը դասականից մրցակցին հաղթելու տեխնիկայի ավելի բազմազան զինանոցն է։ Մենամարտի նպատակը տարբեր հնարքներ օգտագործելով հակառակորդին երկու թիակների վրա գետնին պառկեցնելն է: Ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտում թույլատրվում են նետումներ, մրցակցի ոտքերից բռնել, ոտք գցել և շրջել: Մենամարտի համար հատկացվում է 5 րոպե, և եթե այդ ժամանակահատվածում հաղթողը չի որոշվում, նշանակվում է լրացուցիչ 3 րոպե։

Հանդիպումը տևում է մինչև մարզիկներից մեկի հաղթանակը: Ընդհանրապես, ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտի ծննդավայրը անգլիական Լանկաշիր կոմսությունն է, չնայած այդ մարզաձևն այնտեղ մեծ տարածում չի գտել։ Հետագայում ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտը եվրոպացի վերաբնակիչների կողմից տարվել է Հյուսիսային Ամերիկա, որտեղ էլ այն լայն տարածում է գտել։ Այն առանձնահատուկ սեր է վայելել Միացյալ Նահանգների բարձրագույն ուսումնական հաստատությունների ուսանողների շրջանում: Հենց այնտեղ էլ ցույց է տրվել, որ ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտը շատ կոշտ և ագրեսիվ մարզաձև է, որտեղ տեխնիկայի սահմանափակումներ չկան, ներառյալ ցավային հնարքները, վերջույթների հոդերի վրա ճնշումները և այլ կեղտոտ նրբերանգներ, որոնք թույլատրելի են համարվել։

Երբ 1904 թվականին Օլիմպիական խաղեր են անցկացվել ամերիկյան Սենթ Լուիսում, ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտի մրցաշարն առաջին անգամ ընդգրկվել է Օլիմպիական խաղերի ծրագրում։ Բնականաբար, լոբբիստները, որպես Օլիմպիադայի տանտերեր, եղել են ամերիկացիները։ Օլիմպիական կոմիտեն գնացել է զիջումների և ըմբշամարտի այդ տեսակը ներառել մրցումների մեջ։ Ըմբշամարտի մրցաշարին մասնակցած բոլոր ըմբիշները ներկայացրել են Միացյալ Նահանգները, իսկ եվրոպացի մարզիկները, ընդհանուր առմամբ, ծանոթ չեն եղել ըմբշամարտի այդ տեսակին, ինչի պատճառով էլ չեն մասնակցել ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտի մրցաշարին։ Հետագա տարիներին՝ սկսած 1904 թվականից, ԱՄՆ-ի հավաքականի մարզիկներն են տարբեր քաշային կարգերում արժանացել հարյուրից ավելի օլիմպիական մրցանակների։

Որոշ ժամանակ անց ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտը սկսել է տարածվել այլ երկրներում, հատկապես ԽՍՀՄ-ում, այդ թվում՝ Հայաստանում: Հիմա էլ ամերիկացիների հետ հիմնականում մրցակցում են հետխորհրդային երկրների, մասնավորաբար Հայաստանի մարզիկները, թեպետ վերջին տարիներին այլ երկրներ ևս սկսել են հաջողությամբ մասնակցել ազատ ոճի ըմբշամարտի մրցաշարերին:
