Հովհաննես Թումանյանի թանգարանի բացումը Երևանում նախաձեռնել է Ամենայն հայոց բանաստեղծի այրին Օլգա Թումանյանը։ 1949թ․, Թումանյանի ծննդյան 80-ամյա հոբելյանի առթիվ, ՀԽՍՀ կառավարությունը որոշում է ընդունում կառուցել թանգարանի շենքը։ Ճարտարապետ Գրիգոր Աղաբաբյանի նախագծով սկսվում է շինարարությունը։ Օգտագործվել է Արթիկի տուֆ քարը, որը Երևանի երկաթգծի կայարան է հասցվել գնացքով, այնուհետև մեենաներով՝ շինհրապարակ։

Նախագիծը Թիֆլիսի՝ Թումանյանի տան հատակագծով է՝ բացառությամբ ճակատային հատվածի։ Երկրորդ հարկը հուշային բաժին է՝ Թումանյանի թիֆլիսյան վերջին բնակարանը՝ վեց սենյակներով, նույնությամբ վերարտադրված և ժամանակին եղած կահավորանքով։ Թանգարանի հիմնադիրը և առաջին տնօրենը եղել է բանաստեղծի դուստրն՝ Անուշ Թումանյանը։

Ավելի քան 18 հազար ցուցանմուշները ձեռագրերի պատճեններ են, ֆոտոփաստաթղթեր և Թումանյանի ինքնատիպ ստեղծագործությունների բնօրինակները, մոտ 10 հազար գիրք ունեցող անձնական գրադարանը։ Ֆիլմի ցուցադրումից հետո ներկաներին ողջունեց ֆոնդապահ Մարինե Բաղդասարյանը, ով 40 տարի աշխատում է Թումանյանի թանգարանում։ Եղան այլ ելույթներ ևս։

Երեկոյի վերջում թանգարանի կողմից շնորհակալագրեր տրվեցին ֆիլմի կայացմանն օժանդակող թատերական ու պարային խմբերին։ «Թիվ 405»-ը ֆիլմի ստեղծման համար արժանացավ նաև «Հովհաննես Թումանյան-100» արծաթե հուշամեդալի։

Ներկայում Հովհ․ Թումանյանի թանգարանի շենքը հիմնանորոգվում է, և շինարարական աշխատանքները կտևեն մոտ 3 տարի։ Այս պատճառով Թումանյան թանգարանի ցուցանմուշները տեղափոխվել ու ցուցադրվում են «Հրանտ Մաթևոսյան» մշակութային կենտրոն-թանգարանի շենքում։ Ֆիլմի ընթացքում ներկայացվում է նաև կատարվող շինարարական աշխատանքների ու նախագծային փոփոխությունների մասին։

Երեկոյին ներկա էին թանգարանի նախկին ու ներկա աշխատակիցներ, արվեստասերներ, բարեկամներ, մշտական այցելուներ, թանգարանի հիմնանորոգման ճարտարապետ Հրաչյա Վարդանյանը, այլոք։
