Միացյալ Նահանգներից էնտուզիաստ հետազոտող Էրիկ Ուլիսն ասել է, որ ինքը պարզել է պատմության մեջ ամենահայտնի ինքնաթիռի առևանգումն իրականացրած անձի անունը։ Այս մասին գրում է People-ը։
1971թ.-ին անհայտ անձը, ով պնդել է, թե ինքը Դեն Կուպերն է, առևանգել է Boeing 727-ը, որը երթևեկում էր Պորտլենդ, Օրեգոնից դեպի Սիեթլ, Վաշինգտոն: Այնտեղ նա 200 հազար դոլար փրկագին է պահանջել, իսկ ինքնաթիռի թռիչքից հետո օդաարիկով դուրս է թռել։ Դրանից հետո նրան ոչ ոք չի տեսել։ Լրագրողների սխալի պատճառով այսօր լեգենդար հանցագործին անվանում են Դի Բի Կուպեր։
Ըստ Ուլիսի՝ 20-րդ դարի ամենաառեղծվածային հանցագործության մեղավորը Crucible Steel-ի ինժեներ Վինս Պետերսոնն է, ով մահացել է ավելի քան 20 տարի առաջ։ Հետազոտողն այս եզրակացություններն արել է՝ վերլուծելով առևանգողի փողկապի վրա հայտնաբերված տիտանի մասնիկները, որոնք նա թողել է ինքնաթիռում։
Տիտանի համաձուլվածքը, ասել է Ուիլսը, արտադրվել է Փենսիլվանիայի Crucible Steel գործարանում, որտեղ աշխատել է Պետերսոնը: Ընկերությունը Boeing-ի գլխավոր կապալառուներից մեկն էր 1960-ականներին։ Նրա աշխատակիցները պարբերաբար թռչում էին Սիեթլ՝ օդանավ արտադրողի հետ աշխատելու համար։ Ենթադրվում է, որ Դ.Բ. Կուպերը շատ լավ գիտեր Boeing 272 ինքնաթիռը, ինչը թույլ է տվել նրան փախչել։ Սա, ըստ Ուլիսի, նույնպես մատնանշում է Պետերսոնին:
Հետազոտողը դեռ չի բացահայտել հետաքննության բոլոր մանրամասները, սակայն Պետերսոնին անվանել է «շատ հետաքրքիր մարդ»:
«Ես կարող եմ նրան կապել Սիեթլի և «Բոինգ» կորպորացիայի հետ», – ասել է Ուլիսը՝ հավելելով, որ շուտով նախատեսում է մանրամասն ուսումնասիրել նրա պատմությունը:
