Սալորը մարդկությանը հայտնի է շատ վաղուց։ 

Ռուսաստանում այս մշակույթը հայտնվեց ցար Ալեքսեյ Միխայլովիչի թեթև ձեռքով 1654 թվականին, Իզմայլովոյի նրա այգում ծառ է տնկվել։ Սալորի նկատմամբ հարգալից վերաբերմունքը դեռևս պահպանվում է Մեծ Բրիտանիայում: Սա անգլիական թագուհու սիրելի միրգն էր, նա ամեն օր սալոր էր ուտում նախաճաշին։ 

 

Ներկայումս հայտնի են այս պտղատու մշակաբույսերի ավելի քան 250 տեսակներ, որոնք առկա են սիրողական և արդյունաբերական այգիներում հյուսիսից հարավ գրեթե բոլոր շրջաններում: Կարմիր, սպիտակ, կապույտ, սև, մանուշակագույն, կարմիր մրգերը հիացնում են իրենց հիանալի ներդաշնակ համով և արտաքին տեսքով։ Քիչ մրգեր ունեն մրգերի գույների, ձևերի, չափերի նման բազմազանություն։
