Թոմ Հարդին ծնվել է Մեծ Բրիտանիայի Սուրրեյ կոմսությունում, նրա ծնողները երկուսն էլ արտիստներ էին: 
 
«Ես մեծացել եմ իմ մոր մեծ ուշադրության ներքո,- ասում է Հարդին,- Տունը լի էր գրքերով և երաժշտությունով և ինձ թանկարժեք կրթություն էին տալիս: Կար ընդամենը մեկ խնդիր և դա այն էր, որ ես չարաճճի էի: Իրականում ես չափից շատ չարաճճի էի»-ասել է Հարդին։
 
Երբ նա 11 տարեկան էր, դպրոց այցելած ոստիկանը նրան զգուշացրել է թմրանյութերի վտանգի մասին և Հարդին պատասխանել է. «Հիանալի է: Հիմա ես գիտեմ որտեղից գտնեմ դրանք»: 13 տարեկանում նա արդեն հալուցինոգեններ էր օգտագործում: 
 
Մի քանի տարի անց նա գողության համար վտարվել էր դպրոցից: 16 տարեկան հասակում նա ամբողջովին ալկոհոլի և թմրանյութերի ազդեցության տակ էր և նույնիսկ մի անգամ ձերբակալվել էր: 
 
Մի անգամ նա այնքան վատ է եղել, որ ասել է. «Ես կոկաինի համար մորս կվաճառեմ»:
Այդ իրավիճակը շարունակվում էր այնքան ժամանակ, երբ 2003թ.-ին նրան գտան արյան լճի մեջ ընկած Լոնդոնում:
 
«Դա դաս էր ինձ համար,- ասում է Հարդին,- մահը տեսնելով ես վերածնվեցի»։
Հարդին գնաց վերականգնման և արդեն մեկ տասնամյակ է ոչինչ չի օգտագործում: Հիմա նա իր էներգիան օգտագործում է ֆիզիկական ֆիտնեսի համար՝ մարզվելով Ռոյալ Մարինեսի հետ, ինչպես նաև մարտարվեստով զբաղվելով:
 
Չնայած գրանցված արդյունքներին, Հարդին գիտի, որ կախվածության վտանգները երբեք չեն անհետանում:
«Միակ բանը, որ ինձ փրկում էր այդ մռայլ ժամանակներին, որպես դերասան աշխատելն էր: Ես գնացի դրան, որպեսզի ստիպեմ հորս հպարտանալ ինձանով: Դերասան լինելը լավ էր ստացվում ինձ մոտ, և ես ժամանակ ներդրեցի դրանում: Այսօր ես շատ հաջողակ եմ, որ անում եմ դա, քանի որ ամեն օր ես սովորում եմ ու սիրում իմ գործը»։

'It's not as if people are frightened of me when they meet me socially,' Hardy, here in Legend, said - admitting he is as scared of the bad guys he plays as anyone else is
 
The actor, seen here with a bodyguard at the Groucho club after the premiere of The Revenant, first got involved in drugs as a teenager, getting expelled from his boarding school aged 16 for stealing
