Հնուց ի վեր ընդունված բան է, որ անունը ճակատագրական նշանակություն ունի մարդու կյանքում: Հենց այս գաղափարի հանդեպ հավատն էր, որ հաճախ ստիպում էր մարդկանց նորածնի անվանակոչման հարցում դիմել իմաստունների, եկեղեցականների օգնությանը, ինչու չէ նաև այն, որ մինչև այսօր հնդիկների մոտ անունը ընդունվում և ընկալվում է որպես մարմնի առանձին մաս՝ այնպես ինչպես բերանը, աչքերը: Նրանք միմյանց անունները տալիս առավել քան զգույշ են, քանի որ անզգուշության դեպքում դա կարող է վիրավորել անունը կրողին: Իսկ ի՞նչ եք կարծում ինչու՞ են էսկիմոսները ծերության շրջանում փոխում իրենց անունը: Ահա այդ հարցի պատասխանը. նրանք կարծում են, որ նոր անունը իր հետ նոր ուժ և եռանդ կարող է բերել: Ավստրալիական որոշ ցեղերում մարդիկ հաճախ գաղտնի են պահում իրենց իրական անունը ՝ չար աչքից խուսափելու ակնկալիքով:
Հոգեբանության մեջ ևս «անունը » ուսումասիրվել և ուսումնասիրվում է տարբեր կողմերից. մի դեպքում այն կապվում է անձի բնավորության առանձնահատկությունների հետ, մյուս դեպքում ընկալվում է որպես մարդկանց վրա ազդելու միջոց և այլն: Ժամանակին Դեյլ Քարնեգին ասել է. «Մարդու անունը վերջինիս համար ամենաքաղցր և ամենակարևոր ձայնն է ցանկացած լեզվով»: Հաշվի առնելով այս հանգամանքը՝ մարդու հետ հաղորդակցվելիս կարևոր է հաճախակի շեշտել վերջինիս անունը և որ ամենակարևորն է՝ ամեն կերպ խուսափել անունը մոռանալու կամ շփոթելու հավանականությունից, քանի որ դա կարող է ընկալվել որպես սեփական անձի նկատմամբ անհարգալից վերաբերմունք:
Մարդկանց հետ փոխհարաբերություններում անունն ունենում է այնքան հզոր ազդեցություն, որքան ժպիտը, ժեստերը, հայացքը, և ոչ մի այլ բառի մարդը չի արձագանքում այնպես, ինչպես դա անում է իր անունը լսելիս: Խնդիրը նրանում է, որ կյանքի առաջին իսկ պահից, անհատական զարգացման ընթացքում անունը աստիճանաբար դառնում է մարդու էության մի մասնիկը, ինքնագիտակցության առաջին բաղադրատարրը: Ինքնագիտակցության գաղափարը այստեղ խիստ կարևոր է, քանի որ ինչպես ցույց են տվել հոգեբանների կողմից վերջին ժամանակներս իրականացրած հետազոտությունների արդյունքները, այն մարդկանց մոտ ովքեր փոխում են իրենց անունը հայտնվում են որոշակի անձնային ճգնաժամում՝ « ինքնագիակցության ճգնաժամում»:
Հատկապես կյանքում բազում դժվարությունների են հանդիպում այն մարդիկ, ովքեր ունեն ծիծաղելի կամ տարօրինակ անուններ. 1986թ . ամերիկացի մի խումբ թերապևտների կողմից իրականացված հետազոտության արդյունքները ցույց տվեցին, որ նմանօրինակ անուններ կրողների մոտ քառակի անգամ ավելի են հոգեբանական բարդույթները, նրանց մոտ փոքր հասակից ձևավորվող ծիծաղի առարկա չդառնալու վախը հետագայում նպաստում է նաև բնավորության համապատասխան առանձնահատկությունների ձևավորմանը:
