1820թ.-ի հունվարի 23-ին Մարդն առաջին անգամ ոտք դրեց Անտարկտիդա

Անի Ասլանյանը ֆեյսբուքյան իր էջում գրում է.
1819-1821թթ. ռուսական արշավախումբը «Միրնի» և «Վոստոկ» նավերով և Ֆադեյ Բելինսհաուզենի ու Միխայիլ Լազարևի գլխավորությամբ պտտվեց անհայտ մայրցամաքի շուրջը և, 1820թ.-ի հունվարի 23-ին առաջին անգամ մոտենալով Անտարկտիդայի ափերին, ոտք դրեց մայրցամաքի վրա։ Այդ օրը մտել է պատմության մեջ որպես Անտարկտիդայի բացահայտման տարեթիվ:
Անտարկտիդայի մակերեսը կազմում է շուրջ 14 մլն. կմ²։ Անտարկտիդան համարվում է ամենացուրտ, ամենաչոր մայրցամաքը՝ ամենաուժեղ քամիներով։ Անտարկտիդան համարվում է անապատ, քանի որ առափնյա խորությունը տարեկան ավելանում է ընդամենը 200 միլիմետրով, որը տարածքի համեմատ նվազ է:
Այստեղ գոյատևում են միայն ցրտակայուն օրգանիզմներ, որոնց թվում են բազմաթիվ բույսերի և կենդանիների տեսակներ (պինգվիններ, ծովահորթեր և այլն), բակտերիաներ, սնկեր, բույսեր և պրոտիստաներ։ Նմանատիպ բուսականությունը բնորոշ է տունդրային։
Անտարկտիդան բավական ուշ է հայտնաբերվել։ 1772թ. անգլիացի Ջ.Կուկի արշավախումբը շարժվեց հարավ, մոտեցավ Անտարկտիդային, բայց չնկատեց այն։
Սառույցները ճեղքել հնարավոր չէր և վերադառնալուց հայտարարեց, որ հարավային մայրցամաք գոյություն չունի, իսկ եթե լինի էլ, ապա դա հնարավոր է միայն բուն բևեռի մոտերքում, որին հասնելը նավարկության համար անմատչելի է։
