Այսօր ամերիկահայ գրող Վիլյամ Սարոյանի ծննդյան օրն է:

Վիլյամ Սարոյանը ծնվել է Արևմտյան Հայաստանի Բիթլիս քաղաքից Ֆրեզնո գաղթած հայի ընտանիքում: Բոստոնի «Հայրենիք» շաբաթաթերթում 1933 թ. տպագրվել է նրա առաջին պատմվածքը՝ Սիրակ Գորյան ստորագրությամբ: Սարոյանի պատմվածքների անդրանիկ ժողովածուն՝ «Խիզախ պատանին թռչող ճոճաձողի վրան», լույս է տեսել 1934 թ. և ճանաչում բերել գրողին:

«Թեև գրում եմ անգլերեն և ծնունդով ամերիկացի եմ, բայց ես ինձ համարում եմ հայ գրող: Լեզուն, որով գրում եմ, անգլերենն է, միջավայրը, որ նկարագրում եմ, ամերիկյան է, իսկ ոգին, որ ինձ մղում է գրելու, հայկական է: Ուրեմն ես հայ գրող եմ և պատկանում եմ հայ գրողների ընտանիքին»,- ասել է Սարոյանը:

1939 թ. «Կյանքիդ ժամանակը» պիեսի համար Սարոյանն արժանացել է Նյու Յորքի քննադատների և Պուլիտցերյան մրցանակների, բայց վերջինից հրաժարվել է՝ նշելով, որ պետությունը չպիտի խառնվի գրականության գործերին:

Սարոյանը ՀԽՍՀ «Խաղաղության պահպանման և հայրենիքի հետ կապերի ամրապնդման ուղղությամբ ակտիվ գործունեության համար» մրցանակի առաջին դափնեկիրն է:

Սարոյանի անունով Երևանում կոչել են փողոց, դպրոց և համալսարան, կանգնեցվել է հուշարձանը:

Վիլյամ Սարոյանը մահացել է 1981 թվականի մայիսի 16-ին, Ֆրեզնոյում: 2008 թ. գրողի ծննդյան 100-ամյակի առթիվ ՀՀ-ում հայտարարվել էր «Սարոյանական տարի»: Այս տարի «Վերածնունդ» մշակութային և ինտելեկտուալ հիմնադրամը Վիլյամ Սարոյանի տուն-թանգարանի նախագծի և #Saroyanweek-ի շրջանակում, «Զանգակ» գրատան հետ հանդես են եկել ու նախատեսել մի շարք նախաձեռնություններ: Օրինակ՝ դեռ օգոստոսի 24-ից «Զանգակ» գրատանը ներկայացված է Սարոյանի գրաֆիկական աշխատանքների վերատպությունների բաց ցուցադրությունը: Ներկայացված աշխատանքները Կալիֆոռնիայի համալսարանի հայագիտության ամբիոնի և Forever Saroyan ՍՊԸ-ի արխիվից են:
