Ուգանդայի օլիմպիական մարզուհի Ռեբեկա Չեպփթեգեյը մահացել է Քենիայի հիվանդանոցներից մեկում, որտեղ նա բուժվում էր ընկերոջ կողմից հարձակման ենթարկվելուց հետո, հայտնում է Associated Press-ը։
Նշվում է, որ 33-ամյա մարզուհու մարմնի 80%-ն այրվել է։ Երկրի սպորտի նախարարը հայտարարել է, որ իշխանությունները պետք է ավելին անեն գենդերային բռնության դեմ պայքարելու համար: Ներքին գործերի նախարարության Էլդորեթ քաղաքի ուսումնա-խորհրդատվական հիվանդանոցի խոսնակ Օուեն Մենահը հինգշաբթի հաստատել է Չեպփթեգեյի մահը:
Մենշը հայտնել է, որ երկար մրցատարածության վազորդըուհին մահացել է այսօր վաղ առավոտյան՝ օրգանների անբավարարության պատճառով:
Հարձակումից մեկ ամիս առաջ Չեպփթեգեյը մասնակցում էր Փարիզի Օլիմպիական խաղերի կանանց մարաթոնին։ Նա եզրագիծը հաղթահարել է 44-րդ տեղը։
Տրանս Նզոյայի ոստիկանապետ Ջերեմի օլե Քոսիոմը հայտարարել է, որ Չեպփթեգեյի ընկերը՝ Դիքսոն Նդիման, անցյալ կիրակի վիճաբանության ժամանակ գնել է բենզինով տարա, լցրել և այրել է այն: Նդիման նույնպես այրվածքներ է ստացել և բուժվում է նույն հիվանդանոցում։
Մենշը հայտնել է, որ Նդիման դեռ վերակենդանացման բաժանմունքում է՝ մարմնի ավելի քան 30%-ի այրվածքներով, սակայն նրա վիճակը «բարելավվում է և կայուն է»:
