Հունվարի 27-ը Հոլոքոստի զոհերի հիշատակի միջազգային օրն է: Այն սահմանվել է ՄԱԿ-ի Գլխավոր Ասամբլեայի 2005 թվականի նոյեմբերի 1-ի 60/7 բանաձեւով, տեղեկացնում է «Արմենպրես»-ը:

«Հոլոքոստ» տերմինը (հին հունական holocaustosis՝ «ողջակեզ», «կրակով ոչնչացում») տարածում է գտել 1950-ական թվականներին՝ շնորհիվ գրող Էլի Վազելի՝ Օսվենցիմի նախկին կալանավորի (1986 թվականի Խաղաղության նոբելյան մրցանակի դափնեկրի) գրքերի: Այդ տերմինով նա անվանել է Գերմանիայի, նրա դաշնակիցների եւ նրա կողմից բռնազավթված երկրների տարածքում նացիստների կողմից հրեաների զանգվածային ոչնչացումը: Պատմաբանների գնահատումների համաձայն՝ Հոլոքոստի զոհերի ընդհանուր թիվը գերազանցում է վեց միլիոնը:

Հունվարի 27 ամսաթիվն ընտրվել է այն բանի կապակցությամբ, որ 1945 թվականի այդ օրը խորհրդային զորքերն ազատագրեցին Օսվենցիմ համակենտրոնացման ճամբարը (այն գտնվում է Լեհաստանի տարածքում, գերմանական անվանումն է՝ Աուշվից), որտեղ սպանվել է ավելի քան 1,1 մլն մարդ, ներառյալ շուրջ մեկ միլիոն հրեա:

Բանաձեւն ուղղված է Հոլոքոստի՝ որպես պատմական իրադարձության ժխտման փորձերի դեմ եւ դատապարտում է կրոնական անհանդուրժողության բոլոր դրսեւորումները:

Ամեն տարի հունվարի 27-ին Նյու Յորքում ՄԱԿ-ի կենտրոնական հիմնարկներում եւ ՄԱԿ-ի բաժանմունքներում (Վիեննայում, Ժնեւում, Նայրոբիում) կազմակերպվում են տարբեր արարողություններ եւ հիշատակի միջոցառումներ, ներառյալ Հոլոքոստի հետ կապված իրադարձություններին նվիրված փաստագրական ֆիլմերի ցուցադրումը եւ ցուցահանդեսների կազմակերպումը: Առաջին անգամ Հոլոքոստի զոհերի հիշատակի օրը նշվել է 2006 թվականին:
