ԱՄՆ Սմիթսոնյան ինստիտուտի բուսաբանները Հավայան արշիպելագի Կաուայ կղզում մեխակենիների ընտանիքի բույսի նոր տեսակ են հայտնաբերել։ Այն ստացել է Schiedea waiahuluensis անվանումը։ Դրա մասին հայտնում է PhytoKeys պարբերականը։

Ըստ գիտնականների՝ Հավայան կղզիներում աճում է բնիկ բույսերի մոտավորապես 1400 տեսակ, որոնցից շատերը եզակի են և մոլորակի վրա ոչ մի այլ վայրում չեն հայտնաբերվել: Սակայն Հավայան բուսական աշխարհի այս բազմազանությունն ուսումնասիրելը բավական դժվար է:

Բանն այն է, որ շատ տեղական բույսեր շատ մարդկանց և նրանց ներմուծած խոտակերների, վնասատուների և վարակների մեղքով հազվագյուտ տեսակի են վերածվել: Բացի դրանից, այս բույսերի հսկայական մասն աճում է դժվարին և անմատչելի լեռնային վայրերում, ներառյալ՝ զառիթափ ժայռերին։

Գիտնականները տարածքը հետախուզելիս տեսախցիկով հագեցած կվադոկոպեր օգտագործելով Վայմեա կիրճի լանջերին հայտնաբերել են հազվագյուտ Schiedea waiahuluensis բույսը: Հետագայում անօդաչու սարքը համալրվել է հեռակառավարվող դանակով՝ հետագա հետազոտությունների համար նմուշներ հավաքելու համար:

Բույսի նոր տեսակը մինչև 40 սանտիմետր բարձրություն ունեցող նեղ տերևներով և կանաչավուն ծաղիկներով թուփ է։ Այն հանդիպում է բացառապես Վայմեա կիրճի չոր լանջերին՝ 530-950 մետր բարձրության վրա։ Նրա պոպուլյացիան կազմում է մոտ 345 նմուշ։ Գիտնականները ենթադրում են, որ Schiedea waiahuluensis-ի թվաքանակը ժամանակին շատ ավելի մեծ է եղել՝ 18-րդ դարի վերջից կղզու էկոհամակարգերում ավերածություններ գործած վայրի այծերի ներմուծումից առաջ:
