«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Տամ-տամը հարվածային երաժշտական գործիք է՝ գոնգի տեսակներից մեկը: Այն բաղկացած է մեծ ուռուցիկ սկավառակից, որը պատրաստված է մետաղից, առավել հաճախ՝ բրոնզից: Նվագի համար օգտագործված մուրճը փայտե բռնակ է՝ քաթանե ծայրակալով: Մուրճով հարվածելիս սկավառակը երկար ժամանակ թրթռում է, որի արդյունքում ստացվում են բարձրացող և մարող ձայնային ալիքներ, ինչը ստեղծում է հսկայական ձայնային զանգվածի զգացողություն: Տամ-տամն ունի հանդիսավոր, տխուր և ահեղ տոնայնություն: Տամ-տամ կարելի է նվագել տարբեր ձևերով: Բարդ ռիթմեր ստանալու համար օգտագործվել են թմբուկային փայտիկներ կամ մետաղական ձողեր, որոնք քսում են սկավառակին:
 
Ձայներ կարելի է հանել նաև կոնտրաբասային աղեղով: Տամ-տամ երաժշտական գործիքի ծագման երկու տարբերակ կա: Դրանցից մեկն ասում է, որ այդ գործիքը կարող է ասիական արմատներ ունենալ, նրա նմանությունը գոնգերի ընտանիքին դրա մասին է խոսում: Չինական գոնգի և նրա առաջացրած ձայնի համեմատությունը հաստատում է այս վարկածը: Երկրորդ վարկածի համաձայն, տամտամը համարվում է հին աֆրիկյան ցեղերի երաժշտական գործիք: Նախկինում աֆրիկացիները դրա արտադրության համար օգտագործել են կոկոսի կեղևներ և գոմեշի չոր կաշի: Արևել յան, արևմտյան և կենտրոնական Աֆրիկայում տամ-տամի երկու տեսակ կա: Առաջին տեսակը ամուր փայտ է՝ ծառի երկարությամբ կտրված կամ փորված, և ունի նվագելու երկու մակերես: Երկրորդ տիպը երկկողմանի կաշվով պատված հարվածային գործիք է. մի կողմով նվագում են բարձր նոտաներ, մյուսով՝ ցածր:
 
Այս տեսակներից բացի, տամ-տամի բազմաթիվ տարատեսակներ կան: Ընդ որում, դրանց չափերը տարբեր են՝ 2 մետրից սկսած մինչև շատ փոքրիկ գործիքներ: Աֆրիկայում տամ-տամն օգտագործվել է որպես հաղորդակցման միջոց՝ ցեղակիցներին ծննդյան կամ մահվան, թշնամիների հարձակման, աղետի մոտենալու և այլնի մասին տեղեկացնելու համար: Կախարդական ծեսերը ևս, ինչպիսիք են գուշակություններն ու անեծքները, կապված են այդ գործիքի հետ: Անգամ մի քանի դար առաջ Կոնգոյի տիրակալը իր հրամանները տարածում էր տամ-տամի օգնությամբ, այն ժամանակ ավելի քան երեսուն կիլոմետր հեռավորության վրա թմբուկի ձայներ էին լսվում: Մեր ժամանակներում էլ Աֆրիկայի շատ գյուղերում տեղեկության փոխանցման նման ծես է պահպանվել: Դասական երաժշտության մեջ կոմպոզիտոր Ջակոմո Մեյերբիրն է առաջինը սկսել օգտագործել տամ-տամը:
 
Ներկայիս ժամանակակից տամ-տամ երաժշտական գործիքը մի փոքր է տարբերվում իր նախնուց: Տամ-տամի արտադրության համար ամենահաճախը բրոնզ է օգտագործվում, պակաս հաճախ՝ պղնձի և երկաթի խառնուրդ: Սկավառակն ինքնին ունենում է ուռուցիկ ձև և տպավորիչ չափեր: Նվագախմբային երաժշտական ստեղծագործություններում դա հնարավորություն է տալիս երաժշտությանը փոխանցել հատուկ տրամադրություն՝ վեհություն, տագնապ և սպառնալիք: Տամ-տամ կարելի է լսել բազմաթիվ հայտնի գործերում՝ Չայկովսկու թիվ 6 սիմֆոնիայի վերջում, Ռիմսկի-Կորսակովի «Մատնաչափիկ»-ում, Գլինկայի «Ռուսլան և Լյուդմիլա»-ում և այլն:
