Այսօր՝ դեկտեմբերի 21-ին, Երևանի ժամանակով 13:20-ին, Արեգակը կանցնի երկնային հորիզոնի նկատմամբ ամենացածր կետով, ինչն էլ աստղագիտական ձմռան սկիզբն է համարվում:

Դրանից հետո Արեգակն ամեն օր ավելի ու ավելի բարձր հետագծով կհատի երկինքը, որի շնորհիվ ցերեկվա տևողությունն աստիճանաբար կսկսի երկարել։ Այս մասին հայտնում են Բյուրականի աստղադիտարանից։

Այդ օրը կոչվում է ձմեռային արևադարձի օր, իսկ հյուսիսային կիսագնդում կդիտվի ամենաերկար գիշերն ու ամենակարճ ցերեկը:

Երևանում արևածագից մինչև արևամուտ կտևի ընդամենը 9 ժամ 18 րոպե։

Երկրի պտտման առանցքը թեքված է Երկրի` Արեգակի շուրջ պտտման ուղեծրի հարթության նկատմամբ (23°26')։ Դա պայմանավորում է տարվա եղանակների փոփոխությունը:
Տարբերվում են երկու տեսակի արևադարձեր՝ ամառային և ձմեռային: Երկրի հյուսիսային կիսագնդում ձմեռային արևադարձը ներկայումս տեղի է ունենում դեկտեմբերի 21-ին, իսկ ամառայինը՝ հունիսի 21-ին:

Ձմեռային արևադարձի ժամանակ, ինչպես նշվեց, դիտվում է ամենակարճ ցերեկն ու ամենաերկար գիշերը, իսկ ամառային արևադարձի ժամանակ՝ հակառակը՝ ամենաերկար ցերեկն ու ամենակարճ գիշերը:

Երկրի միջին աշխարհագրական լայնություններում աստղագիտական ձմռան և գարնան ընթացքում կեսօրին Արեգակը հորիզոնից ավելի ու ավելի է բարձրանում (գիշերվա տևողութունը սկսում է նվազել, իսկ ցերեկվանը՝ աճել), և ամառային արևադարձի ժամանակ, գտնվելով հորիզոնի նկատմամբ ամենաբարձր կետում, կարծես կանգ է առնում, և սկսում է շարժվել հակառակ ուղղությամբ (գիշերվա տևողութունը սկսում է աճել, իսկ ցերեկվանը՝ նվազել) մինչև ձմեռային արևադարձի ժամանակ կրկին հայտնվում է հորիզոնի նկատմամբ ամենացածր կետում:

Հարավային կիսագնդի ձմեռային արևադարձը համընկնում է հյուսիսային կիսագնդի ամառային արևադարձին, իսկ ամառայինը՝ հյուսիսային կիսագնդի ձմեռային արևադարձին: Այնպես որ, հարավային կիսագնդի բնակիչների համար ներկայումս ամենաերկար ցերեկներն ու ամենակարճ գիշերներն են։
