В Госдепе назвали Панамский канал стратегическим активом

Нынешняя американская администрация во главе с Дональдом Трампом считает Панамский канал «стратегическим активом», который не может находиться под контролем Китая «ни де-факто, ни де-юре». Об этом заявил спецпредставитель США по Латинской Америке Маурисио Клавер-Кароне.
«Это ключевой вопрос. Потому что в сухом остатке речь идет о ключевом, важном, стратегическом активе. И, разумеется, если XXI век будет веком Америки, золотым веком [Северной и Южной] Америк, то данный стратегический актив не может находиться под контролем Китая ни де-факто, ни де-юре», - сказал он. Клавер-Кароне выступил на специальном онлайн-брифинге для журналистов, который был посвящен первой зарубежной поездке нового госсекретаря США Марко Рубио.
Как ранее было официально объявлено в Вашингтоне, Рубио посетит 1-6 февраля Панаму, Сальвадор, Коста-Рику, Гватемалу и Доминиканскую Республику, встретится с должностными лицами и представителями бизнеса. Госдепартамент США заявил, что поездка нацелена на развитие сотрудничества в борьбе с нелегальной миграцией, преступностью и контрабандой наркотиков, а также на противодействие Китаю.
