«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Չնայած այն հանգամանքին, որ մարդկությունը սկսել է շաքարեղեգի մելասից ալկոհոլ պատրաստել մի քանի հազար տարի առաջ, ռոմի իրական բումը սկսվել է 17-րդ դարում Ջամայկայում: Եվ մինչ օրս էլ շատերը ռոմը կապում են ծովահենության և այն ժամանակների հետ, երբ սրընթաց ֆլիբուստերները աբորդաժով գերեվարում էին ոսկով բեռնված գալեոնները, իսկ հետո նշում հաջող ավարառությունը թունդ ալկոհոլով:

Այն ժամանակների ամենահայտնի ծովահեններից մեկը Հենրի Մորգանն էր։ Նրա զարմանահրաշ կյանքը հիմք է հանդիսացել Ռաֆայել Սաբատինիի՝ նավապետ Բլենդի մասին վեպերի համար։ Հենրին նավի վրա վարձվել էր որպես յունգա, որից հետո նրան վաճառել էին ստրկության, իսկ ավելի ուշ նա դարձել էր ծովահենների նավատորմի ծովակալ և Ջամայկայի նահանգապետ։ Նրան այդ պաշտոնում նշանակել էր հենց ինքը՝ անգլիական թագուհին՝ որպես պարգև այն բանի համար, որ Մորգանը հիմնականում թալանում էր իսպանական նավերն ու բնակավայրերը։

Հենց այս հետաքրքիր պատմական գործչի պատվին էլ անվանվել է այդ պահին ամենահայտնի ռոմը` «Կապիտան Մորգանը»: Այսօր այդ ռոմը արտադրության ծավալով աշխարհում յոթերորդ ալկոհոլային խմիչքն է, իսկ ԱՄՆ-ում՝ երկրորդը։

Իսկ ամեն ինչ սկսվել է 1944 թվականին, երբ Seagram ընկերության աշխատակից Բրոնֆմանը ընկերության համար Ջամայկայում գնել է ծովահենական ըմպելիքի՝ ռոմի արտադրության գործարան: Հատկապես այդ թորման գործարանն էր նրան հետաքրքրում, քանի որ դրա արտադրած ռոմը իր բաղադրատոմսում պարունակում էր դեղաբույսեր և համեմունքներ, որոնք խմիչքը դարձնում էին ավելի փափուկ և համեղ:

1950-ականներին ընկերությունը որոշել է «Կապիտան Մորգան» ռոմի արտադրական օբյեկտները Ջամայկայից տեղափոխել Պուերտո Ռիկո։ Այդ որոշման հիմնական պատճառը Պուերտո Ռիկոյում հարկային զգալի արտոնություններն էին։ Մինչև 1980-ականների կեսերը ահեղ ծովահենի անունով ռոմը վաճառվում էր միայն Կարիբյան տարածաշրջանում: Պետք է ասել, որ «Կապիտան Մորգանը» միջազգային ապրանքանիշ դարձնելու որոշումը Seagram ընկերությանը հսկայական շահույթ է բերել։

2001 թվականին հայտնի դարձավ, որ Seagram-ը մտադիր է վաճառել «Կապիտան Մորգան» ապրանքանիշը։ Հայտնի ապրանքանիշի գնորդը դարձավ Diageo ընկերությունը, որը կրկին հարկային զգալի արտոնությունների պատճառով իր գործարանը տեղափոխեց Վիրջինյան կղզիներ։ Ավելին, այդ ըմպելիքը ներկայումս շշալցվում է Մեծ Բրիտանիայում։ Այսպիսով, ռոմը, որն անվանվել է Ջամայկայի հետ սերտ կապ ունեցող լեգենդար գործչի անունով, արտադրվում է բոլորովին այլ վայրում:

Այնուամենայնիվ, կարելի է ըմպել նաև Ջամայկայում արտադրված «Կապիտան Մորգան» ռոմ: Բանն այն է, որ երբ Seagram-ը տեղափոխվեց Պուերտո Ռիկո, հին թորման գործարանը վաճառվեց J.
