Նախիջևանը «Ադրբեջանի պատմական տարածքն է» , որն ավելի քան մեկ դար անջատված է Ադրբեջանի հիմնական մասից և չունի ցամաքային կապ՝ խորհրդային վարչակազմի կողմից «Արևմտյան Զանգեզուրը» Ադրբեջանից անջատելու և Հայաստանին փոխանցելու պատճառով։
Այս մասին Թուրքիայում հայտարարել է Ադրբեջանի նախագահ Իլհամ Ալիևը: Նրա խոսքով՝ սա լուրջ «անարդարությունը» է:
«Ղարաբաղյան առաջին պատերազմի ժամանակ Հայաստանը շրջափակել էր Նախիջևանը։ Հայերը ցանկանում էին «օկուպացնել» Նախիջևանը, «ինչպես արեցին Ղարաբաղի դեպքում»: Հայրս՝ Հեյդար Ալիևը, որն այն ժամանակ Նախիջևանի ղեկավարն էր, դա թույլ չտվեց։ Նախիջևանը չգրավելու պատճառներից մեկը Նախիջևանի և Թուրքիայի միջև Հույսի կամուրջի կառուցումն էր։
Թուրքիայի օգնությունը նշանակալի ներդրում է ունեցել Նախիջևանի անվտանգության գործում», – ասել է Ալիևը։
Նախիջևանը Հայաստանի առաջին հանրապետության մասն է եղել։ Սակայն 1921-ի մարտի 16-ին Խորհրդային Ռուսաստանը և Թուրքիան Մոսկվայում կնքել են պայմանագիր, ըստ որի՝ Նախիջևանը հանձնվել է Խորհրդային Ադրբեջանին։ Այժմ Նախիջևանը հայաթափված է և բռնակցված Ադրբեջանի Հանրապետությանը։
