«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Պորտուգալիան այն երկրներից է, որտեղ հին ժամանակներից են տիրապետել գինեգործության արհեստին: Այնտեղ առաջին խաղողի այգիները տնկվել են փյունիկցիների կողմից: Նրանք էլ հենց սկսել են պատրաստել առաջին գինիները։ Այստեղ զարմանալի ոչինչ չկա. երկրի շատ շրջաններ իդեալական են խաղող աճեցնելու համար՝ շնորհիվ կլիմայի և հողի կազմի:

Մինչ օրս, ըստ հետազոտողների մեծամասնության, տեղական խաղողի այգիներից որոշներն իրենց պատմությունը տանում են դեպի փյունիկցիների տնկարկները, և հենց այնտեղ են ստացել խաղողի այն եզակի տեսակները, որոնք հնարավոր չէ գտնել աշխարհի ոչ մի այլ վայրում: Պարզվում է, որ այդ խաղողի այգիներն արդեն մոտ երկուսուկես հազար տարեկան են, այսինքն՝ գործնականում մի տեսակ կենդանի պատմություն են, որին կարող է «միանալ» ցանկացած զբոսաշրջիկ կամ պարզապես խանութում նմանատիպ խմիչք պատվիրած գնորդ։

Հին հռոմեացիները, նվաճելով այն տարածքները, որոնք այժմ մաս են կազմում Պորտուգալիայի, լրջորեն զբաղվել են նաև խաղողագործությամբ՝ զգալիորեն մեծացնելով խաղողի այգիների տարածքները և այդ հռոմեական նահանգը վերածելով գինեգործության խոշոր կենտրոնի: Միջնադարում գինեգործությանը այնտեղ, ինչպես և ամբողջ Եվրոպայում, աջակցում էին վանքերը, որոնք գինին օգտագործում էին ինչպես իրենց կարիքների, այնպես էլ վաճառքի համար։ Տեղի ազնվականությունը ևս զգալի պլանտացիաներ է ունեցել։ Հենց այդ ժամանակ էլ ձևավորվել են գինեգործական հիմնական շրջանները, որոնցից ամենահայտնին դարձել է Մադեյրան։ Բայց Վինու Վերդեն, Դոուրուն, Դաոն, Բայրադան, Ալենտեժուն և Կուլարեցը նույնպես ունեն իրենց առավելությունները, և դրանցից յուրաքանչյուրը կարող է առաջարկել խմիչքներ, որոնք չեն զիջում եվրոպական լավագույն ապրանքանիշերին։

Երկար ժամանակ գինին պատրաստվում էր միայն կենցաղային օգտագործման համար, սակայն աստիճանաբար սկսել են ավելի ու ավելի շատ ալկոհոլ ուղարկել վաճառքի, իսկ հետո՝ արտահանման։ Ամեն ինչ սկսվել է անգլիացիներին գինու վաճառքից, ինչին մեծապես նպաստել են անգլո-ֆրանսիական անվերջանալի պատերազմները։ Երբ ֆրանսիական շուկան փակվել է Մեծ Բրիտանիայի համար, գինիների նոր մատակարարների կարիք է առաջացել, և Պորտուգալիան է դարձել մատակարարներից գլխավորներից մեկը։ Ըստ պահպանված փաստաթղթերի, պորտվեյն գինին է առաջինն ուղարկվել համտեսի 1367 թվականին։ Խմիչքը ակնհայտորեն համեղ է եղել, քանի որ, չնայած մրցակցությանը, թե ով կդառնա ամենաուժեղ ծովային տերության մատակարարը, մեծ քանակությամբ պորտուգալական գինով բեռնված նավերն սկսել են ավելի ու ավելի հաճախակի մտնել բրիտանական նավահանգիստներ:

Մեր օրերում Պորտուգալիան զարգացած գինեգործությամբ երկիր է, և այնտեղ կարելի է գնել և՛ մեծ գործարանում արտադրված և ամբողջ աշխարհում հայտնի գինիներ, և՛ փոքր գինեգործարաններից մեկում ստեղծված ըմպելիք, որտեղ աշխատանքներն իրականացվում են ավանդական մեթոդներով, և թվում է, թե ժամանակը կանգ է առել։ Ուղղակի նման «հազվադեպություն» փորձելու համար մարդիկ ստիպված պետք է անձամբ գնան Պորտուգալիա։
