ՄԱԿ-ը նախազգուշացրել է, որ նահանջող սառցադաշտերը սպառնում են ամբողջ աշխարհում 2 միլիարդ մարդու սննդի և ջրի պաշարներին, քանի որ հալման ներկայիս աննախադեպ արագությունն անկանխատեսելի հետևանքներ կունենա:
Համաձայն ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի զեկույցի, աշխարհի ոռոգվող գյուղատնտեսության երկու երրորդը, հավանաբար, ինչ-որ կերպ կազդի սառցադաշտերի հալման և լեռնային շրջաններում ձյան տեղումների կրճատման հետևանքով, որոնք առաջացել են կլիմայական ճգնաժամի հետևանքով:
Ավելի քան 1 միլիարդ մարդ ապրում է լեռնային շրջաններում, և նրանց կեսը զարգացող երկրներում արդեն զգում է պարենային անապահովություն: Իրավիճակը, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, կվատթարանա, քանի որ նման շրջաններում սննդի արտադրությունը կախված է լեռնային ջրերից, ձնհալից և սառցադաշտերից, համաձայն Ջրի համաշխարհային զարգացման զեկույցի 2025 թ.
Զարգացած երկրները նույնպես վտանգի տակ են։ ԱՄՆ-ում, օրինակ, Կոլորադո գետի ավազանը 2000 թվականից ի վեր երաշտի մեջ է, իսկ ավելի տաք ջերմաստիճանը նշանակում է, որ ավելի շատ տեղումներ են ընկնում անձրևի տեսքով, որն ավելի արագ է հալչում, քան ձյունը լեռներում՝ սրելով չոր պայմանները:
Սառցադաշտերի փոփոխության տեմպերը գրանցված ամենավատ ցուցանիշներն ունեն, ասվում է Համաշխարհային օդերևութաբանական կազմակերպության ուսումնասիրության մեջ, որն այս շաբաթ հրապարակել է Կլիմայի վիճակի տարեկան զեկույցը: Հետազոտությունը ցույց է տվել, որ անցած երեք տարիներին գրանցվել է պատմության մեջ ամենամեծ սառցադաշտի հալոցքը, որոնցից ամենաշատ տուժած տարածքներն են Նորվեգիան, Շվեդիան, Սվալբարդը և արևադարձային Անդերը:
Արևելյան Աֆրիկան որոշ տեղերում կորցրել է իր սառցադաշտերի 80%-ը, իսկ Անդերում սառցադաշտերի մեկ երրորդից կեսը հալվել է 1998 թվականից: Ալպերի և Պիրենեյների սառցադաշտերը՝ Եվրոպայի ամենավատ տուժած տարածքները, մոտավորապես նույն ժամանակահատվածում կրճատվել են մոտ 40%-ով:
