Այն հորմոնները, որոնք պատասխանատու են ախորժակի կարգավորման, ֆիզիկական ակտիվության եւ էներգիայի ծախսի համար, տղամարդու եւ կնոջ օրգանիզմում տարբեր կերպ են աշխատում: Դա հանգեցնում է նրան, որ տղամարդիկ եւ կանայք տարբեր եղանակով են ավելորդ քաշ կորցնում. կանանց համար դա անհամեմատ ավելի դժվար է:    Փաստացիորեն կանացի ուղեղը «ծրագրված» չէ նիհարելու համար, ինչպես պարզել են Աբերդինի համալսարանի հետազոտողները:  

Գիտնականները մկների վրա ուսումնասիրել են, թե գիրացումն ինչպես է տարբերվում երկու սեռի մոտ` կախված ֆիզիկական ակտիվությունից եւ էներգետիկ ծախսերից:  Աշխատանքի ընթացքում գիտնականները կարողացել են ճարպակալմամբ տառապող արուներին վերածել նիհար, առողջ կրծողների, բայց չի հաջողվել նույն բանն անել էգերի դեպքում:   Ինչպես պարզվել է,  պրոօպիոմելանոկորտին (ՊՕՄԿ) անունով բարդ պոլիպեպտիդը, որը կնոջ օրգանիզմում պատասխանատու է ախորժակի կարգավորման, ջերմություն արտադրելու եւ ֆիզիկական ակտիվության խթանման միջոցով էներգիայի ծախսի ավելացման համար, կանացի օրգանիզմում պատասխանատու է միայն ուտելու ցանկության համար եւ մնացորդային «բոնուսներ» չի տալիս, տեղեկացնում է The Telegraph-ը:

«Ներկայումս ոչ մի տարբերություն չկա նրանում, թե ճարպակալումն ինչպես է բուժվում տղամարդկանց եւ կանանց մոտ:  Իսկ մենք պարզել ենք, որ ուղեղի հատվածները, որոնք էական ազդեցություն են ունենում մարդկանց` կալորիաներ ծախսելու եղանակի վրա,   տարբեր կերպ են գործում տղամարդկանց եւ կանանց մոտ: Դա կարող է հեռահար հետեւանքներ ունենալ ճարպակալման դեմ պայքարող դեղամիջոցների արտադրության ոլորտում, որոնք ներկայումս  զգալիորեն անտեսում են հիվանդի սեռը», - նշել է Աբերդինի համալսարանի (Մեծ Բրիտանիա) Սննդի եւ առողջապահության  ինստիտուտի հետազոտության ղեկավար Լորա Հեյլերը:
