Հետազոտողները գնահատում են, որ աշխարհի վարելահողերի մոտ մեկ վեցերորդն աղտոտված է թունավոր ծանր մետաղներով, և աշխարհում մոտ 1,4 միլիարդ մարդ ապրում է բարձր ռիսկային գոտիներում, գրում է The Guardian-ը:
Համաշխարհային մշակաբույսերի մոտ 14-17%-ն (մոտ 242 միլիոն հեկտար) աղտոտված է առնվազն մեկ թունավոր մետաղով, ինչպիսիք են մկնդեղը, կադմիումը, կոբալտը, քրոմը, պղինձը, նիկելը կամ կապարը, որոնք գերազանցում են գյուղատնտեսության և մարդու առողջության համար նախատեսված շեմերը:
Վերլուծության ընթացքում գիտնականները տվյալներ են հավաքել աշխարհի ավելի քան 1000 տարածաշրջանային հետազոտություններից, ինչպես նաև օգտագործել են մեքենայական ուսուցման տեխնոլոգիա:
Հողի աղտոտումը թունավոր մետաղներով տեղի է ունենում ինչպես բնական, այնպես էլ մարդու գործունեության արդյունքում: Աղտոտված հողը զգալի վտանգ է ներկայացնում էկոհամակարգերի և մարդու առողջության համար, ինչպես նաև նվազեցնում է բերքատվությունը, վտանգում ջրի որակը և սննդի անվտանգությունը գյուղատնտեսական կենդանիների կենսակուտակման միջոցով:
Թունավոր մետաղներից աղտոտվածությունը կարող է պահպանվել տասնամյակներ, երբ դրանք մտնում են հող:
Հետազոտության տվյալները համադրելով բնակչության համաշխարհային բաշխման հետ՝ հետազոտողները գնահատել են, որ աշխարհում 900 միլիոնից մինչև 1,4 միլիարդ մարդ ապրում է բարձր ռիսկային տարածքներում: Պարզվել է, որ կադմիումն ամենատարածված թունավոր մետաղն է և հատկապես տարածված է Հարավային և Արևելյան Ասիայում, Մերձավոր Արևելքի և Աֆրիկայի մասերում:
