Օսթինի Տեխասի համալսարանի գիտնականները կարևոր բացահայտում են կատարել, որը լույս է սփռում Մարսի հնագույն ջրային ցիկլի վրա: Նրանց հետազոտությունը, որը հրապարակվել է Geophysical Research Letters ամսագրում, ցույց է տալիս, որ միլիարդավոր տարիներ առաջ Կարմիր մոլորակի վրա ջուրը ներթափանցում էր ընդերք տասնյակ անգամ ավելի դանդաղ, քան Երկրի վրա՝ ձևավորելով ընդարձակ ստորգետնյա ջրամբարներ: Այս բացահայտումը բացատրում է, թե ինչու Մարսը վերածվեց չոր անապատի:

Ինչպե՞ս էր աշխատում Մարսի ջրային ցիկլը

Հետազոտողների ստեղծած համակարգչային մոդելը ցույց է տալիս, որ 3–4 միլիարդ տարի առաջ Մարսի վրա ջուրը խորքային ջրաշերտեր էր ներթափանցում 50–200 տարվա ընթացքում: Ի համեմատություն, Երկրի վրա նման գործընթացները տևում են ընդամենը մի քանի օր: Ներթափանցման այս դանդաղ տեմպը հանգեցրեց նրան, որ ջրի զգալի մասը «փակվեց» մոլորակի ընդերքում:

Գիտնականների գնահատմամբ, ստորգետնյա ջրի ընդհանուր ծավալը կարող էր ծածկել Մարսի ամբողջ մակերեսը մոտ 90 մետր հաստությամբ շերտով: Սակայն, ի տարբերություն Երկրի, որտեղ ջուրը ակտիվորեն վերադառնում է մթնոլորտ գոլորշիացման և տեղումների միջոցով, Մարսի վրա այս շրջապտույտը խիստ սահմանափակ էր: Խոնավությունը կա՛մ մնում էր ընդերքում, կա՛մ գոլորշիանում էր տիեզերք՝ մոլորակի թույլ մթնոլորտի պատճառով:
