Օրաբաժնից ընդամենը մեկ ամինաթթվի՝ ցիստեինի բացառումը կարող է հանգեցնել արագ և զգալի քաշի կորստի։ Նյու Յորքի համալսարանինառընթեր Բժշկական դպրոցի հետազոտողների անցկացրած փորձի ժամանակ նման սննդակարգով մկները կորցրել են իրենց քաշի մինչև 30%-ը։ Հետազոտության արդյունքները հրապարակվել են Nature գիտական հանդեսում։
Ցիստեինն էներգիայի նյութափոխանակության մեջ կարևոր դեր խաղացող՝ հակաօքսիդանտ գլուտատիոն և A կոենզիմ մոլեկուլների սինթեզին մասնակցող և ծծումբ պարունակող ամինաթթու է:

Ցիստեինի հեռացումը օրաբաժնից գենետիկորեն մոդիֆիկացված մկների օրգանիզմում ակտիվացրել է միանգամից երկու պաշտպանիչ ռեակցիա՝ ինտեգրված բջջային սթրես (ISR) և օքսիդատիվ սթրես (OSR): Դա հանգեցրել է նյութափոխանակության արագ վերակառուցման. ճարպերի այրումը մեծացել է, իսկ սննդանյութերի վերամշակման բնականոն ուղիները խաթարվել են։
Գիտնականները գրանցել են նաև կոենզիմ A-ի մակարդակի կտրուկ անկում, ինչը վատթարացրել է միտոքոնդրիաների՝ բջիջների էներգետիկ կայանների աշխատանքը։ Օրգանիզմը ստիպված էր անցնել էներգիա ստանալու ավելի քիչ արդյունավետ եղանակների, դրանց թվում՝ անաէրոբ գլիկոլիզին։ Այդ դեպքում կորսվել են հիմնականում ճարպային պաշարները, մինչդեռ մկանային զանգվածը պահպանվել է։
Պարզվել է նաև, որ ազդեցությունը լիովին շրջելի է. սովորական օրաբաժնին վերադառնալուց հետո մկներն արագ վերականգնել են իրենց նախկին քաշը։ Հետազոտության հեղինակների կարծիքով, այդ հայտնագործությունը կարող է հիմք ծառայել մարդկանց ճարպակալման և նյութափոխանակության խանգարումների դեպքում կարճաժամկետ նյութափոխանակության միջամտությունների մշակման համար։
