Միջնադարյան եզակի Ուալատա քաղաքը, որը մի ժամանակ տրանսսահարյան առևտրի և իսլամական կրթության կարևոր կենտրոն էր, արագորեն անհետանում է անապատի գրոհման պատճառով։ Ըստ մասնագետների՝ առանց քաղաքի պահպանման անհապաղ միջոցառումների, ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի Համաշխարհային ժառանգության այս օբյեկտը մոտ ապագայում կարող է լիովին կորսվել, հաղորդում է Lenta.ru-ն։

11-րդ դարում հիմնադրված Ուալատա քաղաքը ծաղկում է ապրել 14-16-րդ դարերում՝ որպես Սահարայի քարավանային ճանապարհների կարևորագույն կետ։ Այստեղ հատվում էին Հյուսիսային Աֆրիկան Արևմտյան Սուդանի նահանգների հետ կապող առևտրային ճանապարհները։ Քաղաքը հայտնի էր իր մեդրեսեներով և հարուստ գրադարաններով։

Այսօր շենքերի միայն մոտ 30%-ն է բնակելի, ամեն տարի 5-7 պատմական շենք ամբողջությամբ ավերվում է, 14-16-րդ դարերի եզակի ձեռագրերը կորչում են պահպանման պայմանների բացակայության պատճառով, իսկ ավազե փոթորիկները պարբերաբար ծածկում են փողոցներն ու տները։

«Վերջին 40 տարում մենք կորցրել ենք հին քաղաքի կեսից ավելին,- ասում է տեղացի պատմաբան Մոհամեդ ուլդ Ահմեդը,- Եթե ոչնչացման տեմպը շարունակվի, 20-30 տարի հետո Ուալատայից միայն հիշողություն կմնա»։

Կլիմայի փոփոխությունը, մասնավորապես՝ երաշտների և անկանխատեսելի տեղումների ավելացումը, արագացնում է ոչնչացումը։ Տեղացիները պատմում են, թե 1980-ականներին Ուալատայի մզկիթն այնքան էր ծածկվել ավազով, որ հավատացյալներն աղոթում էին տանիքին։ Ծառեր տնկելու և իրազեկվածությունը բարձրացնելու նպատակով փառատոներ անցկացնելու նախաձեռնությունները չեն կարողացել կանգնեցնել քայքայումը։ Առանց նոր ներդրումների՝ եզակի քաղաքը կարող է ընդմիշտ անհետանալ:

Նմանատիպ իրավիճակ է նկատվում տարածաշրջանի այլ պատմական քաղաքներում՝ Շինգետիում, Տիշիտում և Վադանում ևս, որոնք նույնպես ներառված են Համաշխարհային ժառանգության վտանգված վայրերի ցանկում։
