Հալեպի հայկական «Գանձասար» պարբերականը ներկայացրել է լուսանկարներ, որտեղ պատկերված են ահաբեկչական խմբավորումների կողմից Սիրիայի Լաթաքիայի շրջանի Ղնեմիե բնակավայրում գտնվող Սուրբ Գևորգ եկեղեցու, դրա հարակից տարածքների և գերեզմանատանը հասցված վնասները:

Ինչպես հաղորդում է «Արմենպրես»-ը, Սիրիական բանակն օրերս ազատագրել է Լաթաքիայի մի շարք գյուղեր, որոնց թվում նաև հայաբնակ Ղնեմիե գյուղը: Դրանք տևական ժամանակ գտնվում էին զինյալ խմբերի ազդեցության ներքո: Վերջիններս իջեցրել էին եկեղեցու խաչը և հրկիզել եկեղեցու սրահը:

Սուրբ Գևորգ եկեղեցին կառուցվել է 1875 թվականին տեղի բնակչության կողմից: Սակայն տեղացի մեծահասակների վկայություններով` 1875-ը համարվում է վերանորոգման թվականը, իսկ եկեղեցին շուրջ 300 տարվա պատմություն ունի:


1959 թվականին առաջնորդ Ղևոնդ արքեպիսկոպոս Չեպեյանի նախաձեռնությամբ ծրագրավորվում է կիսաքանդ եկեղեցու հիմնական կառուցումը: Պաշտոնական հիմնարկեքը կատարվում է օգոստոսի 9-ին, իսկ նորաշեն եկեղեցու օծումը` 1960 թվականի հուլիսի 31-ին` Չեպեյանի ձեռամբ: 1997 թվականին Բերիո Հայոց թեմի ազգային առաջնորդարանի կողմից վերանորոգվում է գմբեթը: 1991 թվականին կառուցվում է եկեղեցու սրահը:

Նախքան սիրիական պատերազմը Ղնեմիե գեղատեսիլ գյուղում կազմակերպվում էին սիրիահայ միությունների տարեկան ճամբարներն ու արշավները: Իսկ ամեն տարի Սուրբ Աստվածածնի Վերափոխման տոնի հանդիպակաց կիրակին ուխտագնացություն էր կազմակերպվում դեպի Ղնեմիեի Սուրբ Գևորգ եկեղեցի:
