Երուսաղեմի հրապարակներից մեկը կոչվել է Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրած Եղիա Քահվեջյանի անունով

Երուսաղեմի քաղաքապետարանը հրապարակ է անվանակոչել հայտնի լուսանկարիչ Էլիա Քահվեջյանի պատվին, հաղորդում է Первый Ближневосточный թելեգրամյան ալիքը։
Ցուցանակին եբրայերեն գրված է՝ «Էլիա Քահվեջյան հրապարակ։ Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրած լուսանկարիչ, Երուսաղեմի սիրահար»։
«Էլիա Քահվեջյանը ծնվել է Ուրֆայում։ Նա ընդամենը հինգ տարեկան էր 1915 թվականին, երբ քաղաքի հայ բնակչությունը ապստամբեց թուրքական բանակի դեմ։ Ապստամբությունը սկսվեց Օսմանյան կայսրությունում հայերի կոտորածների մասին հաղորդագրություններից։ Ապստամբներից շատերը սպանվեցին, նրանց թվում՝ Քահվեջյանի հայրը և նրա եղբայրներից մեկը, իսկ ողջ մնացած հայ բնակչությունը, որոնց թվում՝ կանայք, երեխաներ և տարեցներ, մահվան երթի ուղարկվեցին դեպի սիրիական անապատ՝ Դեր էզ-Զորի մերձակա համակենտրոնացման ճամբար, որը հետագայում անվանվեց «Հայերի Օսվենցիմ»։
Մահից առաջ մայրը փրկում է Եղիային՝ նրան տալով մի անհայտ քրդի, որը երեխային վաճառում է մի դարբնի՝ երկու ոսկե մետաղադրամի դիմաց։ Ավելի ուշ Էլիան հայտնվում է փողոցում։ Նա թափառում է և սնունդ է մուրում, մինչև որ նրան վերցնում են մարդասիրական կառույցի աշխատողները։
Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմից հետո Էլիան, ինչպես հազարավոր այլ հայ որբեր, հայտնվում է ամերիկյան Մերձավոր Արևելքի օգնության կոմիտեի ապաստարանում։
Տղային տեղափոխում են տարբեր քաղաքների, մասնավորապես Նազարեթի և Հալեպի՝ որբանոցից որբանոց։ Վերջապես նա հայտնվում է Երուսաղեմում, որտեղ հաստատության աշխատակիցներից մեկը՝ մի հայ, նրան ծանոթացրնում է լուսանկարչության արվեստին։ Սա էլ որոշում է Էլիայի հետագա ճակատագիրը։ Նա իր կյանքը կապեց լուսանկարչության հետ և ավելի ուշ բացեց իր առաջին լուսանկարչական ստուդիան Երուսաղեմում։ Հայ որբի համար սկսվեց հաջողության և համաշխարհային ճանաչման նոր փուլ։
Էլիա Քահվեջյանի ընտանիքի ավելի քան հարյուր անդամ՝ ծնողները, քույրերը և եղբայրները, զարմիկները, մորաքույրերը և հորեղբայրները, դիտավորյալ և համակարգված կերպով սպանվել են Հայոց ցեղասպանության ժամանակ, որի արդյունքում զոհվել է մեկուկես միլիոն հայ։
Այսօր Էլիա Քահվեջյանի ժառանգությունը պահպանվում է Երուսաղեմի Հին քաղաքի Elia Photo Service պատկերասրահում։ Պատկերասրահը պատկանում է Էլիայի թոռանը՝ որը կրում է իր պապիկի անունը», - գրում է թելեգրամյան ալիքը
