Կյանքը վարդագույնով տեսնելու համար սիրո խոստովանությունների սպասելու կարիք չկա. երբեմն բավական է հայտնվել այն յուրահատուկ քաղաքներից մեկում, որտեղ վարդագույնը բառացիորեն միահյուսված է ճարտարապետության հետ։ Մոլորակի վրա միայն հինգը վարդագույն քաղաք կա, և Երևանը դրանցից մեկն է, գրում է ֆրանսիական հեղինակավոր Le Figaro պարբերականը։
Հայաստանի մայրաքաղաք Երևանն աչքի է ընկնում իր քաղաքի կենտրոնի տեսողական ներդաշնակությամբ, որը կառուցված է տեղական հրաբխային տուֆից։ Այս ապարը, որը արդյունահանվում է շրջակա լեռների ստորոտում, ունի կարմիրից մինչև վարդագույն երանգ, սակայն հենց վարդագույն երանգներն են գերիշխում վարչական շենքերի և հին բնակելի թաղամասերի պատկերում։ Առանձնապես հմայում է Հանրապետության հրապարակը. արևի ճառագայթների տակ շենքերի ճակատները փայլում են նուրբ, գրեթե դեղձի երանգի ջերմությամբ։
Պարբերականը նշում է, որ թեև Երևանը աշխարհի ամենահին մշտապես բնակեցված քաղաքներից մեկն է (հիմնադրվել է մ.թ.ա. 782 թվականին՝ Հռոմից առաջ), այն «վարդագույն քաղաք» մականունը ստացել է միայն 20-րդ դարում։
1920-ական և 1930-ական թվականների խորհրդային վերակառուցման ընթացքում ճարտարապետ Ալեքսանդր Թամանյանը Երևանին հաղորդեց ժամանակակից դեմք՝ ընդգծելով միասնությունը գլխավոր փողոցներում և հրապարակներում վարդագույն տուֆի լայնորեն օգտագործման միջոցով։
Բացի Երևանից, վարդագույն քաղաքների ցանկում են ընդգրկվել նաև՝
Ջայպուրը (Հնդկաստան) - ստացել է իր վարդագույն գույնը 1876 թվականին, երբ մահարաջան հրամայել է քաղաքը վերաներկել հյուրընկալության գույներով՝ բրիտանացի արքայազն Ալբերտի այցի կապակցությամբ։ Գույնը մինչ օրս ամրագրված է օրենքով։
Թուլուզը (Ֆրանսիա) - հայտնի է տեղական կավից պատրաստված վարդագույն աղյուսներով, որոնք քաղաքին առանձնահատուկ հմայք են հաղորդում։ Այն համարվում է Ֆրանսիայի ամենահայտնի «վարդագույն մայրաքաղաքը»։
Ալբին (Ֆրանսիա) Թուլուզի փոքր քույրն է, որտեղ գերիշխում են վարդագույն կավը, միջնադարյան աղյուսե ճարտարապետությունը և Սենտ-Սեսիլի վեհաշուք գոթական տաճարը։
Մոնտոբանը (Ֆրանսիա) կավով կառուցված մեկ այլ քաղաք է, որը նրա շենքերի ճակատներին վարդագույն փայլ է հաղորդում, հատկապես Թարն գետի կանաչի ֆոնին։
