Նախապատմական ժամանակներում Կովկասը մշակութային և տեխնոլոգիական նորարարությունների կենտրոն էր, սակայն Մեծ և Փոքր Կովկասի միջև բնակչության պատմությունը դեռևս վատ է ուսումնասիրված։ Դրա մասին նշված է Cell  հանդեսում հրապարակված հետազոտության մեջ։

«Մենք ներկայացնում ենք ժամանակակից Վրաստանի 205 և Հայաստանի 25 անհատների գենոմային տվյալներ, որոնք ընդգրկում են բրոնզի դարից մինչև Մեծ գաղթը (մ.թ.ա. մոտ 3500 - մ.թ. 700 թվականներ) ժամանակահատվածը: Մեր արդյունքները բացահայտում են կայուն տեղական գենոֆոնդ, որը միջինից մինչև ուշ բրոնզի դարաշրջանում կլանել է Անատոլիայից և հարևան Եվրասիական տափաստանից լրացուցիչ գենետիկական բազմազանություն: Հետագա ժամանակաշրջաններում մենք փաստաթղթավորում ենք բնակչության աճը և գենետիկական բազմազանության աճը:

Արհեստականորեն դեֆորմացված գանգեր ունեցող 20 միջնադարյան անհատներից 15-ը տեղական ամուսնական կապերի մաս էին կազմում, իսկ հինգը ծագում ունեին Եվրասիական տափաստանից, ինչը ենթադրում է, որ գանգի փոփոխությունը սկսել է քոչվոր խմբերից, բայց դարձել է տեղական մշակութային պրակտիկա»,- նշվում է հետազոտության մեջ:

Նախապատմության ընթացքում Կովկասը մշակութային և տեխնոլոգիական փոխանակման խաչմերուկ էր, չնայած շրջապատված էր աշխարհագրական խոչընդոտներով, մասնավորապես՝ Մեծ Կովկասի լեռնաշղթայով: Դեռևս մ.թ.ա. 5-րդ հազարամյակում անասնապահությունը տարածվել էր Կովկասի հյուսիսով՝ տափաստան: Նոր տեխնոլոգիաների, մասնավորապես՝ անիվների և սայլերի շնորհիվ այնտեղի տնտեսական համակարգը զարգացել է շարժական անասնապահությունը, որն առաջին անգամ հայտնվեց Հյուսիսային Կովկասում բրոնզի դարաշրջանում:

Նույն ժամանակահատվածում Հարավային Կովկասը դարձել է Կուր-Արաքսյան անունով ավելի մեծ մշակութային համալիրի մաս, որը կապում էր արևելյան Անատոլիան և հյուսիսարևմտյան Իրանը։ Սակայն մ.թ.ա. 3-րդ հազարամյակի վերջին Մեծ Կովկասում մշակութային փոխազդեցությունները սրվեցին, ինչի արդյունքում շարժական անասնապահությունը դարձավ Հարավային Կովկասում գոյատևման գերիշխող պրակտիկա։

Հետազոտողները եզրակացրել են, որ Հարավային Կովկասի բնակչությունը, ընդհանուր առմամբ, գենետիկական առումով բնութագրվում էր իբրև կայուն։ Ընդ որում, նրանք հայտնաբերել են գենետիկ խառնուրդի առանձին դեպքեր։ Գիտնականները ենթադրել են, որ Անատոլիայից և Եվրասիական տափաստանից բնակչության խմբերը նոր տեխնոլոգիաներ են բերել, ներառյալ՝ վերը նշված շարժական անասնապահությունը։ Նրանց համոզմամբ՝ բրոնզի դարից հետո Հարավային Կովկասում գենետիկ խառնուրդի նշանները դարձել են ժամանակավոր կամ սահմանափակվել են առանձին խմբերով։
