Գետերը, որոնք մի ժամանակ բյուրեղյա մաքուր էին և խմելու համար անվտանգ, այժմ ներկվել են նարնջագույն և հոսւոմ են թունավոր մետաղներով լի՝ Ալյասկայի Բրուքս լեռնաշղթան վերածելով էկոլոգիական ճգնաժամի գոտու: Սեպտեմբերի 8-ին «Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences» ամսագրում հրապարակված ուսումնասիրությունը փաստաթղթավորում է, թե ինչպես է հավերժական սառույցների հալումը տասնյակ արկտիկական ջրհավաք ավազաններում առաջացնում թթվային հանքային ջրահեռացման նմանվող պայմաններ:

Ուսումնասիրությունը կենտրոնանում է Սաղմոն գետի վրա, որը սկսել է նարնջագույն դառնալ դեռ 2019 թվականին, երբ Ալյասկայի համալսարանի էկոլոգ Փեդի Սալիվանը նկատել է դրամատիկ փոփոխությունը բորեալ անտառում դաշտային աշխատանքներ կատարելիս: Մի օդաչու զգուշացրել է Սալիվանին, որ գետը ձնհալքից հետո «կոյուղու է նման», ինչը նրան դրդել է համագործակցել Կալիֆոռնիայի համալսարանի կենսաերկրաքիմիկոս Թիմ Լայոնսի և այլոց հետ՝ աղտոտվածությունը ուսումնասիրելու համար:

Հավերժական սառցի հալումը առաջացնում է քիմիական շղթայական ռեակցիա

Գիտնականները պարզել են, որ հավերժական սառույցների հալումը ստեղծում է մետաղների, այդ թվում՝ երկաթի, կադմիումի և ալյումինի թունավոր կոկտեյլ՝ EPA-ի թույլատրելի սահմանային մակարդակներից բարձր: «Դա նման է այն բանին, ինչ տեղի է ունենում թթվային հանքային ջրահեռացման ժամանակ», - ասաց Լայոնսը: «Բայց այստեղ հանք չկա: Հավերժական սառույցը հալվում է և փոխում լանդշաֆտի քիմիան»:

Երբ հավերժական սառույցները հալվում են, ջուրը և թթվածինը առաջացնում են մի գործընթաց, որը քայքայում է սուլֆիդներով հարուստ ապարները, ինչպիսին է պիրիտը, ստեղծելով ծծմբական թթու, և մետաղները արտահոսում է ջրային ուղիներ: Փորձարկված 10 վտակներից ինը գերազանցել են EPA-ի թունավորության սահմանային մակարդակները առնվազն մեկ մետաղի համար, իսկ  ջրի որոշ նմուշներ ցույց են տվել pH-ի այնպիսի մակարդակներ, որոնք ունեն քացախի թթվայնությունը:

Սաղմոնը բազմաթիվ սպառնալիքների առջև է կանգնած

Աղտոտումը ներկայացնում է ինչպես ուղղակի, այնպես էլ անուղղակի սպառնալիքներ սաղմոնի պոպուլյացիայի համար: Չնայած ձկան հյուսվածքում մետաղների ներկայիս կոնցենտրացիաները դեռևս սպառնալիք չեն ներկայացնում մարդու առողջության համար, էկոլոգիական հետևանքները լուրջ են: Չամ սաղմոնը, որը բազմաթիվ բնիկ համայնքների համար հիմնարար տեսակ է, դժվարանում է ձվադրել մանր մասնիկներով ծածկված խճաքարային շերտերում, մինչդեռ երկաթով խցանված ջուրը նվազեցնում է լույսի թափանցելիությունը և խեղդում միջատների թրթուրներին, որոնցով սնվում է սաղմոնը։

Դաշտային դիտարկումները գրանցում են «մակրոանողնաշարավորների բազմազանության և ձկների առատության կտրուկ անկում», որը կապված է գունաթափված առվակների հետ։ Քոբուկի հովտի ազգային պարկում հետազոտողները նկատել են մի քանի ձկնատեսակների լիակատար անհետացում, այդ թվում՝ երիտասարդ Դոլի կարմրախայտի և գոբիի։
