Կյանքից անժամանակ հեռացել է 1992թ. Շուշիի S-72 տանկի անձնակազմից հրաշքով ողջ մնացած հրամանատար, Արցախի զրահատանկային ծառայության հիմնադիր, գնդապետ Գագիկ (Գագա) Ավշարյանը։
Գագիկ և Մխիթար Ավշարյան եղբայրները մասնակցել են Շուշիի ազատագրմանը և առաջինն են իրենց զրահատեխնիկայով մտել քաղաք:
1992 թվականի մայիսի 8-ի գիշերը Ավշարյանը, նշանառու օպերատոր Շահեն Սարգսյանի և մեխանիկ-վարորդ Աշոտ Ավանեսյանի հետ մասնակցեց Շուշիի համար վճռական տանկային մարտին։ Նրանց S-72 տանկը ոչնչացրեց երկու ծանր ամրացված թշնամական հրետանային մարտական միավոր, սակայն Ավշարյանը ծանր վիրավորվեց և տարհանվեց մարտադաշտից։ Տանկը հետագայում պայթեցվեց, ինչի հետևանքով Ավշարյանը մնաց անձնակազմի միակ փրկվածը։
Չնայած ծանր վնասվածքներին՝ Ավշարյանը շարունակեց ծառայությունը, ինչպես նաև անձնուրաց ջանքերով վերականգնեց S-72 տանկը, որ հետագայում դարձավ հուշարձան։
2023 թվականի Արցախի հայաթափումից հետո Ադրբեջանն ապամոնտաժել էր Շուշի տանող ճանապարհին հայերի տեղադրած տանկ-հուշարձանը:
