Հետազոտությունը ցույց է տվել, որ իրենց մայրենի լեզվով մարդիկ ավելի հակված են հույսը դնել հույզերի, պարտքի զգացողության և կանոնների պահպանման վրա: Երկրորդ լեզվով նրանք հակված են ավելի ռացիոնալ որոշումներ կայացնել՝ հաշվի առնելով ընդհանուր բարօրությունը: Այս էֆեկտը կոչվում է «օտար լեզվի բարոյական էֆեկտ»:
Մեկ փորձի ընթացքում 204 իսպանախոս մասնակիցներ լուծել են դասական «կամրջի դիլեման»՝ զոհաբերել մեկ մարդու՝ հինգին փրկելու համար: Նրանք, ովքեր դատողություններ էին անում իսպաներենով, հիմնվել են հույզերի և նորմերի վրա («դա սպանություն է», «ես չեմ կարող մարդ սպանել»), մինչդեռ նրանք, ովքեր խոսում էին անգլերեն, իրենց ընտրությունը կատարել են տրամաբանության հիման վրա («զանգվածային մահը անընդունելի է»):
Նմանատիպ տարբերություններ նկատվել են նաև այլ սցենարներում, բայց էֆեկտը միշտ չէ, որ ակնհայտ է: Օրինակ՝ Կիպրոսում, որտեղ անգլերենը լայնորեն խոսվում է, երկլեզուների որոշումների միջև գործնականում տարբերություններ չեն եղել իրենց L1 և L2 լեզուներով:
Արդյունքները կախված են նաև դիլեմայի բնույթից։ Օրենքի խախտման հետ կապված հարցերում առաջին և երկրորդ լեզուների միջև տարբերությունները ավելի ցայտուն են, մինչդեռ հուզականորեն լիցքավորված «անձնական» իրավիճակներում, օրինակ՝ անհավատարմության դեպքում, լեզուն ավելի քիչ ազդեցություն ունի ընտրության վրա, բայց այն ձևավորում է հուզական տոնը և դրա արտահայտման ձևը։
«Լեզուն ազդում է ոչ միայն այն բանի վրա, թե ինչպես է մարդը արտահայտում զգացմունքները, այլև հենց բարոյական որոշումների վրա։ Մայրենի լեզուն մեծացնում է մեղքի զգացումը և կանոնները հետևելու հակումը, մինչդեռ երկրորդ լեզուն ստեղծում է հեռավորություն և թույլ է տալիս ավելի հանգիստ և տրամաբանական դատողություններ անել», - նշել են ուսումնասիրության հեղինակները։
