Երբեմն մեկ ակնթարթը որոշում է ամեն ինչ: Ակնթարթ, որն ունակ է մեր կյանքը լցնել դժբախտությամբ կամ հրաշքով:
Փոքրիկ Կայլին այդ օրը շատ ուրախ էր, քանի որ իր տարեդարձն էր: Նա հինգ տարեկան էր դառնում: Կայլին երկու քույրիկներ ուներ՝ 4-ամյա Էմման և 2 տարեկան Կեթին, որոնց մասին նա, չնայած իր փոքր տարիքին, հոգ էր տանում: Երեխաները շատ էին ուրախացել, քանի որ այդ օրը նրանք իրենց մայրիկի և տատիկի հետ տոնավաճառ էին գնալու: Այնտեղ փոքրիկները կարող էին խաղալ կենդանիների հետ և նստել իրենց սիրելի «սատանայի անիվը»:
Նրանք հիանալի օր անկացրեցին: Երեխաներն այնքան էին հոգնել, որ տուն գնալու ճանապարհին Կայլին և Էմման քնեցին հենց մեքենայի մեջ: Իսկ փոքրիկ Կեթին անհանգիստ նստած էր՝ նա ուշադրություն էր պահանջում: Կարմիր լույսի տակ կանգնած Լորին խաղաց փոքրիկի ոտնաթաթի հետ: Դա վերջին անգամն էր, որ մայրիկը լսեց իր աղջկա ծիծաղը:
Հանկարծ մի բեռնատար մեքենա, մեծ արագության տակ, բախվեց իրենց մեքենային: Մայրիկն ու տատիկն անմիջապես ուշագնաց եղան: Երեխաներն այնքան լուրջ վնասվածքներ էին ստացել, որ պետք է անմիջապես հիվանդանոց տեղափոխվեին:
Կրիսը՝ երեխաների հայրիկը, իմանալով կատարվածի մասին, շտապեց հիվանդանոց: Երկու փոքրիկ աղջիկներն էլ մահացել էին: Ծնողները հույս ունեին, որ Կայլին կապրի, բայց նման վնասվածքներով, նա ոչ մի հնարավորություն չուներ ողջ մնալու: Ծնողները ստիպված էին անջատել արհեստական շնչառության սարքը: Մի քանի րոպեների ընթացքում, Լորին և Կրիսը հետևում էին, թե ինչպես է իրենց փոքրիկը հանգչում: «Իմ ձեռքը նրա սրտի վրա էր, երբ այն կանգ առավ», – ասում է Կրիսը:
Ընտանիքը գիտակցեց իր կորուստը, երբ տեսավ Կայլիին, Կեթին և Էմմային թաղման արարողության ժամանակ: Ցավն անտանելի էր: Հիշողությունները, կոտրված սրտերը, մեղքի զգացումը՝ այս ամենը տանջում էր ծնողներին:
Սակայն ծնողները որոշեցին ոչ մի դեպքում ինքասպանություն չգործել: Նրանք խոստացան միմյանց երբեք չլքել իրար:
Այդ որոշմանը հաջորդեց մյուսը. Ծնողները ցանկանում էին նորից երեխաներ ունենալ: Լորիին արհեստական բեղնավորում արեցին, որի արդյունքը եղան երկու աղջիկները և մեկ տղան: Էմման, Կեթին և Կայլին: Զույգը միայն մեկ երեխա էր ցանկանում ունենալ, բայց տեսնելով բեղմնավորման արդյունքը՝ հասկացան այդ նշանը:
Էշլի, Էլլի և Ջեյք՝ եռյակ, որը լույս աշխարհ եկավ Կայլիի, Էմմայի և Կեթի մահվանից մեկ տարի անց: «Նրանք երբեք չեն փոխարինի Կայլիին, Էմմային և Կեթին, սակայն մեր տունն ու մեր սրտերը նորից լի են ուրախությամբ, երջանկությամբ և ծիծաղով», – ասում է Լորին:
Եռյակը գիտի, որ իրենցից առաջ ընտանիքում ուրիշ երեք երեխաներ են եղել: Տանը կան նրանց նկարները, և հայրիկն ու մայրիկը պատմում են փոքրիկներին իրենց քույրերի և եղբոր մասին: Երբեմն նրանք միասին գերեզմանատուն են գնում: Այդպես նրանք բոլորը միասին են լինում:
