1978թ-ի հոկտեմբերի 26-ին Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպությունը հայտարարում է ծաղիկ հիվանդության վերացման մասին։
Բնական ծաղիկը մարդկանց, կաթնասուն կենդանիների և թռչունների սուր վարակիչ վիրուսային հիվանդություն է։ Բնորոշվում է բարձր վարակելիությամբ, յուրահատուկ հանգուցա-բշտիկային ցանով (որը լավանալուց հետո թողնում է սպի) և կլինիկական ծանր ընթացքով։
Ծաղկի հարուցիչները քամվող վիրուսներն են, որոնք կայուն են չորացման և ցածր ջերմաստիճանի նկատմամբ։ Վարակի աղբյուրը հիվանդ մարդն է։ Վիրուսը փոխանցվում է օդակաթիլային ճանապարհով, հազվադեպ՝ առարկաների (սպիտակեղեն, հագուստ, խաղալիք) միջոցով։ Գաղտնի շրջանը 5-17, միջինը՝ 14 օր է։ Հիվանդությունն սկսվում է ջերմաստիճանի կտրուկ բարձրացմամբ՝ մինչև 40 °C, տանջող գլխացավերով, սրտխառնոցով, գոտկատեղի ցավերով։ 3-րդ օրվա վերջին դեմքի, վերջույթների, ափերի և ներբանների վրա ի հայտ են գալիս կարմիր բծեր։ Հետագա օրերին ցանի տարրերն անցնում են զարգացման մի քանի փուլ՝ հանգույց, բշտիկ, թարախաբշտիկ և այնուհետև կեղևակալում են ու չորանում՝ թողնելով բնորոշ սպի։
Հիվանդությունը հնարավոր է եղել հաղթահարել պատվաստումների շնորհիվ։ Այժմ այս հիվանդությունը չի հանդիպում։
