Այն հարցը, թե երբ կսպառվեն նավթի պաշարները, շարունակում է արդիական մնալ համաշխարհային տնտեսության և էներգետիկ քաղաքականության համար։
Այսօր նավթը տարբեր արդյունաբերությունների համար էներգիայի և հումքի հիմնական աղբյուրն է։ 2022 թվականին դրա արտադրությունն ու սպառումը հասան ռեկորդային մակարդակի՝ օրական մոտավորապես 100 միլիոն բարել, ինչը ընդգծում է այս ռեսուրսի օգտագործման մասշտաբները։
Սակայն նավթը չվերականգնվող ռեսուրս է, որը ձևավորվել է միլիոնավոր տարիներ առաջ ճնշման տակ օրգանական նյութերի քայքայման արդյունքում: Նոր նավթային պաշարներ արագ ստեղծելը անհնար է, քանի որ դրա ձևավորման գործընթացը ընդգրկում է երկրաբանական ժամանակային շրջանակներ, որոնք անհամեմատելի են մարդկության զարգացման պատմության հետ:
Ներկայիս սպառման մակարդակով պաշարները կարող են սպառվել մի քանի տասնամյակների ընթացքում, եթե չհայտնաբերվեն այլընտրանքային էներգիայի աղբյուրներ կամ նոր արդյունահանման մեթոդներ: Հետազոտողները զգուշացնում են, որ վաղ թե ուշ մարդկությունը ստիպված կլինի անցնել վերականգնվող էներգիայի աղբյուրների՝ արևային, քամու և հիդրոէլեկտրակայանների՝ ապագա սերունդների էներգետիկ անվտանգությունն ապահովելու համար:
Պաշարների սպառման աստիճանը կախված է սպառման տեմպերից, արդյունահանման տեխնոլոգիաներից և քաղաքական որոշումներից: Ակնհայտ է, որ նավթը ժամանակավոր ռեսուրս է, և նոր էներգիայի աղբյուրներին անցումը դառնում է կարևորագույն:
