50 տարեկանից հետո ոսկրային խտությունը նվազում է ավելի արագ, քան վերականգնվում, ինչը մեծացնում է օստեոպենիայի (ոսկրային խտության ցածր մակարդակ) կամ օստեոպորոզի (ոսկրային խտության կորուստ, որը մեծացնում է կոտրվածքների ռիսկը) զարգացման ռիսկը։
Ոսկորների առողջության և օստեոպորոզի հիմնադրամի տվյալներով ՝ կանանց մոտ ոսկրային զանգվածի կորուստը արագանում է դաշտանադադարից հետո, ընդ որում՝ յոթ տարվա ընթացքում այն կարող է նվազել 20%-ով։

Հետևաբար, ոսկորների առողջությունը պահպանելու համար կարևոր է ուտել սնունդ, որը պարունակում է այս սննդանյութերից որքան հնարավոր է շատ: Այդպիսի սննդամթերքներից մեկը կաթնաշոռն է:
