Սկսած ԱՄՆ-ի նոր Ազգային անվտանգության ռազմավարությունից, որը Եվրամիության նախկին բարձրաստիճան դիվանագետ Ժոզեպ Բորելը բնութագրեց որպես «քաղաքական պատերազմի հայտարարություն», մինչև նախագահ Դոնալդ Թրամփի արհամարհական արտահայտությունները, որոնք հնչեցին Politico-ին տված բացառիկ հարցազրույցում,կարելի է ասել, որ սա, անկասկած, եվրոպացի դեսպանների համար ամենաուրախ շրջանը չէր, գրում է հոդվածագիր Ջեյմի Դետմերը։
Եվրոպական երկրների դեսպանատներում այս շաբաթ անցկացված մի քանի Սուրբ Ծննդյան երեկույթներից հետո պարզ դարձավ, որ այնտեղ տրամադրությունը բավականին մռայլ է, ընդգծում է հոդվածի հեղինակը։
Դետմերի կարծիքով՝ սա նման էր նրան, թե ինչպես են եվրոպացիները սարսափով հետևում, թե ինչպես է Գրինչը գողանում Սուրբ Ծնունդը։

Հեղինակի պնդմամբ՝ նույնը տեղի է ունենում նաև այլ եվրոպացի դիվանագետների հետ, որոնք շփվում են միմյանց հետ, վայելում են կանապեներ և իրենց տխրությունն արտահայտում Վաշինգտոնում անցկացվող ընդունելությունների ժամանակ։
«Ինչո՞ւ մեկնաբանել այն տեղեկությունը, որ Թրամփը խառնաշփոթ է առաջացրել տրանսատլանտյան հարաբերություններում։ Ինչո՞ւ ստեղծել լրացուցիչ խնդիրներ։ Զսպվածությունը հասկանալի է, հաշվի առնելով, որ Թրամփի վարչակազմը պատժում է այն դիվանագետներին, որոնք խոսում են առանց հերթի», — գրում է Դետմերը։
Մամուլի տեղեկություններով, անցած ամիս Բելգիայի ռազմական ատաշեն՝ բրիգադային գեներալը, ստիպված էր հրաժարական տալ, երբ Պենտագոնի ղեկավար Փիթ Հեգսեթը վիրավորվեց նրա հայտարարություններից, որոնցում Թրամփի վարչակազմը նկարագրվում էր «խառնաշփոթային և անկանխատեսելի»։
