Գիտնականները մեծ առաջընթաց են գրանցել Մեռյալ ծովի ձեռագրերի ուսումնասիրության մեջ՝ վերծանելով տասնամյակներ շարունակ անհասկանալի մնացած ամենաառեղծվածային եւ դժվարընթեռնելի բեկորներից մի քանիսը։

Դրանք այսպես կոչված «գաղտնի B» տեքստերն են՝ ձեռագրերի փոքր բեկորներ, որոնք գրված են հատուկ գաղտնագրով՝ օգտագործելով աղոտ եբրայերեն եւ հունարեն նիշեր հիշեցնող փոփոխված տառեր։ Տեքստերը հայտնաբերվել են Հրեաստանի անապատի քարանձավներում, Կումրանի ձեռագրերի մեջ, սակայն երկար ժամանակ գրեթե անհնար էր մեկնաբանել դրանք, քանի որ վատ էին պահպանվել եւ անսովոր գիր ունեին։

Վերծանման բանալին հայտնաբերել է Գրոնինգենի համալսարանի հետազոտող Էմանուել Օլիվեյրոն, որն օգտագործել է դասական գաղտնագրությունը եւ վիճակագրական վերլուծությունը։ Նա կենտրոնացել է խորհրդանիշների կրկնվող հաջորդականությունների վրա եւ համեմատել դրանք Երկրորդ տաճարի ժամանակաշրջանի հայտնի կրոնական տեքստերի կառուցվածքի հետ։ Որոշիչ պահերից մեկը «Իսրայել» բառի ճանաչումն էր, որը հնարավորություն տվեց հաստատել կոդավորված նշանների եւ սովորական տառերի միջեւ համապատասխանությունը։

Դրանից հետո վերծանվեցին այլ բեկորներ։ Տեքստերը բացահայտեցին ծանոթ կրոնական բանաձեւեր եւ փոխաբերական արտահայտություններ, այդ թվում՝ հղումներ Իսրայելին եւ Հուդային, աստվածային փառքին եւ մարգարեական իրադարձություններին։ Հատկապես հետաքրքրաշարժ մի հատված խոսում է մեկի մասին, ով «դամբարանների շուրջը բլուրներ է կառուցում», արտահայտություն, որի իմաստը մնում է վիճելի։ Կան նաեւ հղումներ ծեսերի կամ սրբազան իրադարձությունների հետ կապված ժամանակներին եւ գործողություններին, ինչը ենթադրում է, որ տեքստերն ունեցել են կրոնական կամ ծիսական նշանակություն։

Հայտնագործությունը ցույց է տալիս, որ նույնիսկ ամենագաղտնագրված եւ բեկորային ձեռագրերը պարունակում են կարեւոր ապացույցներ հին համայնքների հոգեւոր կյանքի մասին։ «Գաղտնի B»-ի վերծանումը ոչ միայն լուծում է Կումրանի ձեռագրերի երկարատեւ առեղծվածներից մեկը, այլեւ ընդլայնում է մեր պատկերացումները երկու հազար տարի առաջ ստեղծված տեքստերի բարդության եւ բազմաշերտ բնույթի մասին։
