Աշխարհում գոյություն ունեն պետություններ, որոնք այսօր կանգնած են բառացիորեն գոյության կորստի շեմին։ Կլիմայական փոփոխությունները, ծովի մակարդակի բարձրացումը, բնական աղետներն ու տնտեսական ճգնաժամերը որոշ երկրներ հասցրել են այն վիճակին, երբ հարց է առաջանում՝ արդյոք դրանք կպահպանվեն աշխարհի քաղաքական քարտեզի վրա առաջիկա տասնամյակներում։
Առաջին հերթին վտանգված են փոքր կղզային պետությունները։ Օվկիանոսի մակարդակի անընդհատ բարձրացումը աստիճանաբար խլում է նրանց տարածքը։ Մասնագետների գնահատմամբ՝ եթե գործընթացը չկասեցվի, որոշ երկրներ կարող են ամբողջությամբ անցնել ջրի տակ։

Մալդիվները, որոնք շատերի համար զբոսաշրջային դրախտ են, նույնպես լուրջ վտանգի տակ են։ Մասնագետները զգուշացնում են, որ դարի վերջում այս պետության զգալի հատվածը կարող է անհետանալ, եթե գլոբալ ջերմացումը շարունակվի ներկայիս տեմպերով։

Աֆրիկայում անհետացման եզրին է հայտնվել Չադը, որտեղ անապատացման գործընթացը արագ տեմպերով ոչնչացնում է գյուղատնտեսությունը, իսկ ջրի պակասը խորացնում է հումանիտար ճգնաժամը։
Փորձագետները զգուշացնում են՝ եթե միջազգային հանրությունը չձեռնարկի համատեղ ու արդյունավետ քայլեր, առաջիկա տասնամյակներում աշխարհը կարող է ականատես լինել աննախադեպ երևույթի՝ ամբողջական պետությունների վերացմանը։ Սա միայն աշխարհագրական կորուստ չէ, այլ նաև մշակույթների, պատմության և միլիոնավոր մարդկանց ճակատագրերի կորստի վտանգ։
