«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարը (Basilica di San Pietro) կաթոլիկ եկեղեցու գլխավոր եկեղեցին է և աշխարհի ամենահայտնի շինություններից մեկը։ Այն գտնվում է Վատիկանում, իսկ ավելի կոնկրետ՝ այն վայրում, որը ավանդաբար համարվում է Պետրոս առաքյալի թաղման տեղը։

Այդ վայրում առաջին եկեղեցին կառուցվել է դեռ 4-րդ դարում կայսր Կոստանդիանոս Մեծի կողմից (մոտ 324–330)՝ Պետրոս առաքյալի ենթադրյալ գերեզմանի վրա։ Այդ վաղ քրիստոնեական տաճարը կանգուն է մնացել ավելի քան 1100 տարի, բայց միջնադարի վերջում այն խարխլվել էր։ Եվ կառուցվել է այլ՝ ժամանակակից տաճար:

1506 թվականին Հռոմի պապ Հուլիոս Բ-ն է սկսել նոր մեծ տաճարի կառուցումը։ Նախագիծը բազմիցս վերանայվել է, և դրա վրա աշխատել են Վերածննդի և Բարոկկոյի դարաշրջանների մեծագույն վարպետները՝ առաջին նախագծի (կենտրոնական գմբեթի հատակագծի) հեղինակ Դոնատո Բրամանտեն, Ռաֆայել Սանտին, Անտոնիո դա Սանգալլոն (Կրտսեր), Միքելանջելո Բուոնարոտին, որը վերաձևավորել է նախագիծը և ստեղծել վեհաշուք գմբեթը, Կառլո Մադեռնոն, որն ընդլայնել է շենքը և նախագծել ճակատային մասը, Ջան Լորենցո Բերնինին, որն ստեղծել է Սուրբ Պետրոսի հրապարակը և խորանի ծածկը։

Մայր տաճարի պաշտոնական օծումը տեղի է ունեցել 1626 թվականին Հռոմի պապ Ուրբանոս VIII-ի օրոք։ Այսպիսով, Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարի շինարարությունը տևել է 120 տարի։

Տաճարի երկարությունը մոտավորապես 187 մետր է, գմբեթն ունի 136 մետր բարձրություն (աշխարհի ամենաբարձրերից մեկը), տարածքը ավելի քան 15000 քառակուսի մետր է և կարող է միաժամանակ տեղավորել մինչև 60000 մարդ:

Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարը համարվում է աշխարհի ամենամեծ քրիստոնեական եկեղեցին (չնայած Լատերանի բազիլիկան է պաշտոնապես Հռոմի մայր տաճարը): Տաճարի ներսում աշխարհի այլ խոշոր եկեղեցիների չափերն են նշված հատակին՝ Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարի հետ համեմատելու համար։

Համարվում է, որ եկեղեցու գլխավոր խորանի տակ գտնվում է դամբարան, որը, ըստ ավանդույթի, կապվում է Պետրոս առաքյալի՝ առաջին Հռոմի պապի հետ:

Հանրահայտ Միքելանջելոն սկսել է գմբեթի վրա աշխատանքները 71 տարեկանում, բայց չի տեսել դրա ավարտը: Հետագայում նրա նախագծած կառուցվածքի գմբեթը դարձել է բազմաթիվ շենքերի մոդել, այդ թվում՝ Վաշինգտոնի Կապիտոլիումի համար: Մայր տաճարում է գտնվում Միքելանջելոյի հայտնի «Պիետա» քանդակը, որը նրա միակ աշխատանքն է, որը նա երբևէ ստորագրել է: Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարի հրապարակի սյունաշարը խորհրդանշում է «Եկեղեցու գրկախառնությունը», որը ողջունում է աշխարհի տարբեր ծայրերից եկած հավատացյալներին։

Այնուամենայնիվ, չնայած իր կարևորությանը, այն Հռոմի գլխավոր տաճարը չէ. այդ դերը կատարում է Սան Ջովաննին Լատերանոյում։ Բայց Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարը ամենակարևոր կրոնական արարողությունների վայրն է, հատկապես Զատկի և Սուրբ Ծննդյան տոներին, ուխտագնացության կենտրոն է միլիոնավոր մարդկանց համար, բացի դա, այն Վերածննդի և Բարոկկոյի ժամանակաշրջանների ճարտարապետության գլուխգործոց է:
