ԱՄՆ իշխանությունները հետաքննություն են սկսել Meta-ի նկատմամբ՝ նախկին կապալառուների հայտարարություններից հետո, որ ընկերության աշխատակիցները, ենթադրաբար, մուտք են գործել WhatsApp օգտատերերի կոդավորված հաղորդագրություններ, որը, ըստ Meta-ի, օգտագործում է միջանցիկ կոդավորում (end-to-end encryption) եւ, հետեւաբար, ենթադրվում է, որ լիովին գաղտնի է, գրել է The Guardian-ը։

Վեճերի էությունը հիմնվում վերջին տարիներին տարբեր աղբյուրներից ի հայտ եկած մի քանի աղբյուրների պնդումների վրա. Meta-ն եւ WhatsApp-ը կտրականապես հերքում են այս պնդումները՝ դրանք անվանելով տեխնիկապես անհնար եւ «անհեթե»։ Ընկերությունն ընդգծել է, որ միջանցիկ կոդավորումը նշանակում է, որ հաղորդագրությունները կոդավորվում են ուղարկողի սարքում եւ կարող են վերծանվել միայն ստացողի սարքում, եւ որ նույնիսկ Meta սեփական սերվերները չեն կարող կարդալ նամակագրության տեքստը։

Սակայն կողմնակի փորձագետները նշել են, որ իրականում մեսենջերները կարող են հավաքել մետատվյալներ (տեղեկատվություն այն մասին, թե ով ում է գրել, երբ եւ ինչ ֆայլերով), եւ այդ մետատվյալներն այնքան խիստ չեն պաշտպանված, որքան հաղորդագրության իրական բովանդակությունը։ Սա հարցեր է առաջացնում գաղտնիության սահմանների եւ այն մասին, թե որքանով են օգտատերերն իրականում պաշտպանված երրորդ անձանց մուտքից։
