Աշխարհում կան հանցագործություններ, որոնք տարիներ անց շարունակում են մնալ չբացահայտված։ Չնայած լայնածավալ հետաքննություններին, ժամանակակից տեխնոլոգիաներին և հանրային ճնշմանը՝ որոշ դեպքերում մեղավորները երբեք չեն կանգնել դատարանի առաջ։
Ամենահայտնի օրինակներից է «Զոդիակ մարդասպանի» գործը ԱՄՆ-ում։ 1960-ականներին գործող այս անհայտ անձը պատասխանատվություն էր ստանձնում մի շարք սպանությունների համար՝ ոստիկանությանը և մամուլին ուղարկելով գաղտնագրված նամակներ։ Չնայած բազմաթիվ կասկածյալների և հետագա ԴՆԹ հետազոտություններին, գործը մինչ օրս պաշտոնապես չի բացահայտվել։
Մեծ Բրիտանիայում լայն արձագանք է ունեցել Քլաուդիա Լոուրենսի անհետացման գործը։ Թեև սա պաշտոնապես դասվում է որպես անհետացում, բրիտանական ոստիկանությունը տարիներ շարունակ այն դիտարկել է որպես սպանություն։ Գործով եղել են կասկածյալներ, սակայն որևէ մեկը չի դատապարտվել, իսկ մարմինը երբեք չի հայտնաբերվել։
Մեկ այլ աղմկահարույց դեպք է Կանադայում տեղի ունեցած «Highway of Tears» անունով հայտնի շարքային հանցագործությունները, որտեղ տասնյակ կանայք անհետացել կամ սպանվել են տարբեր տարիներին։ Չնայած որոշ առանձին դեպքերի բացահայտմանը, ընդհանուր պատկերը մնում է կիսախավար, իսկ մի շարք ենթադրյալ մեղավորներ չեն հայտնաբերվել։
Այս գործերը ցույց են տալիս արդարադատության համակարգի ամենացավոտ կողմը․ երբ հանցագործությունը մնում է անպատիժ, հասարակության մեջ ձևավորվում է անվստահություն և վախ։ Միևնույն ժամանակ, նման դեպքերը շարունակաբար հիշեցում են, որ անգամ տարիներ անց ճշմարտությունը կարող է բացահայտվել՝ նոր վկայությունների կամ տեխնոլոգիական առաջընթացի շնորհիվ։
